LADIES' HOCKEY.

THE CARNIVAL.

FIRST DAY'S I>LAY AT THE BAY. Tho New Zealand Ladies' Hockey Tournament was commenced at Day's Bay on Saturday, and a large number of spectators made the trip across tho harbour. Much interest centred on the meeting of last year's champions (Hawkc's Bay) and Canterbury A, <wd it may at once Ijc stated that tlie display given by these two teams was far better than tho form shown in tho last men's shield match. Prom the commencement both combinations set a fast pace, and this was maintained throughout. Canterbury, however rather needed a forward who could hit hard when in tho circle, and their defeat lay in their forwards failing to make good use of certain advantage which they held in the latter part of the match. Tho Nelson-Auckland fixture also drew on itself tho attention and interest of a good number of spectators. 11l this contest play was up and down the field all through both spells, the issue being in doubt right up till the call of time. After tho games had finished, Dr. Izard entertained tho teams in tho pavilion at afternoon tea.

SECTION A. Hawkc's Bay, 1; Canterbury A, 0. From the "bully-off" Haivke's Bay attacked, but were not successful in scoring, and the Canterbury right-half brought relief to her side by intercepting. and play removed to tho centre. Canterbury then gradually worked into Haivke's Bay territory, but failed to inake good their advantage, the opposing forwards ultimately securing, apd sweeping play to the Canterbury twenty-five. Here a Canterbury player was penalised, and, from the free-hit. the ball reached the circle, and Miss V. Pitt scored for Hawkc's Bay. For the remainder of the spell play was very even, and no further change in the figures took place. Tho commencement of the second spell saw the Hawkt's Bay forwards on the aggressive, but the Canterbury backs seat the ball on to their front line, and tho latter moved play to tho other end. Nothing came of it, however. The spectators were now treated to what was probr.bly the best play shown by Indies at Day's Bay, tho ball travelling in quick succession to both ends of the field. About half-way through the spell, Canterbury set up an attack which they maintained till tho call of time, but were unablo to equalise the score, and tho game ended iu favour of Hawkc's Bay by 1 goal to nil. Mr. 11. V. Walton was referee. Tam.iaki, 5; Marlborough, 3. The Tnranaki-Marlborough encounter resulted in a win for Taranaki by 5 goals to 3, after a very interesting contost. For Taranaki, Misses M'Eivan (2), Wyijiks, and Young (2) obtained goals, and for Marlborough Misses Hutchinson and Jenkins (2) scored. SECTION B. Wellington A, 2; Canterbury B, 0. ' The local A representatives met Canterbury B on No. 1 ground, and were successful in securing a win. At the commencement play was slow, but about halfway through the spell both teams livened up, and attacked in turn. The spell, however, ended with honours' even, no score. On res'iming, Wellington set up an attack, and Canterbury were practically on the defensive all through the spell. Wellington's first goal was obtained'by Miss Dement from a good cc-ntro sent in by Miss Macdonnell. l'lay then hovered round tho Canterbury goal for some time, I but an opening eventually enabled Miss V. Warren to put on nnotlier goal for her side. From now onward Wellington' held the advantage, but the score remained unaltered. Mr. G. Carver was referee. Nelson, 2; Auckland, 1. , TJhcsi^tearns, ,m<\t on No: ground, and "jjlay-tlirdugliout was fast'and'cve'n. Both sides attacked in turn, but the forwards failed to put on the finishing touch when in tho circle, and tho first half ended pointless. In the second spell Nelson attacked, and eventually Misses Carriclc and 11. Emms were both successful in finding tho net. Auckland noiv took a turn, but nothing resulted, and a few minutes later a Nelson attack missed fire, the shot going wide. An Auckland forward rush then put Nelson on t.lio defence, and a tussle ensued in the circle, Miss Wylio eventually sending, the ball into the not, and securing tho only goal for Auckland. Right on to the call of time tho issuo was in doubt, Auckland coming closo to scoring on two or three occasions, and play was in Nelson's twenty-five when tho whistle sounded. Mr. J. W. Gendall was referee.

SECTION C. Southland, 8; Wellington B, 0. Soulhlaud easily defeated Wellington B by 8 goals to nil. The first half was very evenly contested but, in the second sjwll, tho home combination was outclassed, lho noticeable feature of this match was t'he splendid passing of tho Southland forwards. For Southland Misses M. Marsli (2), J. Marsh (3), and S. Jtarsli (1), and Sorrell (2), secured goals. Mr. J. Manning was the referee. Wanganui, 2; WairnTapa, 1. Tho Wairarapa-Wanganui contest was keenly fought out, and resulted in a win for Vi'anganui by 2 goals to 1. Wairarapa liad several opportunities, but their forwards failed to make use of (hem. Misses l'errctt and Sutherland obtained goals for the winners, and Miss Gallon scored for Wairarapa. Mr. G. Keall referced. West Coast, 0; Wairarapa, 0. A drawn game took place on No. 4 ground between West Coast and Maliawatu. Manawatu had t'he better of tho game, several shots just missing tho net. Air. Jvcan was tho referee. On Saturday afternoon, at ICaiori, a match was played between Taranaki Street ."Jul Thorndon Y.M. Methodist Bible Classes. Tho teams wero evenly matched, and at the call of time the scoro stood 2 all. It was decided to play tho match out, and after twenty minutes' extra play F. Stock notched tho winning goal for Thorndon.
