ANTI-MILITARIST MEETING.

\Bs Telegraph.—Pres3 Association^ ' Christchurcli, August 31. A largelv-attcuded meeting under the auspiccs c-t tho Anti-Militarist League was held to-night. An opposition clement appeared to be present, but the proceedings, thou"b frequently interrupted, were orderly. An address was given on some of tho pacific aspects' of tho peace problem. Tho following motion, proposed by Mr. R- F- Williams and seconded by Mr. H Langford, was agreed to witth a few dissentients:—"That this meeting, believin" militarism to be inimical to the wetfaro of 'tho nation and the progress ot mankind, condemns the compulsory clause in tho Defence Act, and pledges itsell to u=o every effcrt to secure its repeal." On tho 'motion of Mr. J. .A. M'Cullough, seconded bv Mr. Christie (secretary of tho league), il'was decided to forward a copy of tho resolution to the Prime Minister. Thero was an ovation given to the youth Harry Cooke, just recently released from prison for refusing to register, and who was carried through the hall lo the platform oil the shoulders of two young fellows. After the meeting one portion of the noisy crowd outside cheered young Cooke, whilst' the others hooted him.
