En route from New York, via southern ports, the Vacuum Oil Company's chartered steamer Cape Bretou is duo in Wellington • to-day. Upon completion of part discharge of her <;argo of case oil here, the vessel 'proceeds' to Auckland. The Cape Breton is in command of Captain T. W. UNION CO.'S KANNA DESCRIBED. About September 9 the Union Company's new steamer Kanna is duo at Wellington ■ from Home, via Bunbury. The ICanna was ' launched from the shipbuilding yard of . Messrs. Itamagc and Ferguson, of Leith. 1 last April, and is the largest screw steel • steamer constructed at that port for many years. The Kanna has been built to • Lloyd's highest class, with single deck, ' deep frames, .poop, bridge, and topgallant forecastle. Captain and all officers [ have accommodation on the top oi the 1 bridge, amidships, and arrangements for working cargo aro of the most complete description, eight steam winches being ' fixed, while warping winch in poop, steam ' steering gear, and steam windlass aro also provided. Tlioro is also an elaborate f-vs-tcm of electric lighting throughout tho vessel. Tile Kanna is a vessel of 2000 tons I gross register. Triple-expansion engines • arc fitted, having cylinders 21in., 34in. and I 56in. in diameter by 36in. stroke, supplied ' with steam finni two large steel boilers ■ working at 1601b. pressure. On her official trials on the Firth of Forth over tho measured mile a speed of 12 knots was attained, which was considered highly , satisfactory. It is probable that tlio American schooner \V. ll> Talbot, which arii\ed at Buncdin from British Columbia, the other day, will be docked at l'ort Chalmers, if it is deemed necessary. Discharging into railway trucks and into; the steamer Urceze, the Cajie Breton put out 11,627 cases of oil and spirits at Lyttelton on Wednesday, which is said-to o a record day's work for the port. Of the above quantity over WOO cases were transhipped into the Breeze. It will be Tuesday now before the Westport Coal Company's steamer Canopus arrives at .Wellington from Uestport. Mr. Caffin, late purser of 11.M.5. Aorangi, who was invalided ashore last, trip, is. much improved ill health, and is able to move about in tho open. Tlio Anchor Line's Waimca had not maiiccd to negotiate tho Greymouth bar un tfif a late hour last ni-i'ht. Consequently, tile is not expected at Wellington until to-morrow.
