September 1, 11.10 p.m.) Rome, September L Tho authorities have hitherto suppressed the facts of the cholera ravaged in Southern Italy, but tho riot at Verbicaro, a small town in Calabria, lias revealed tho fact that a hundred corpses lay uuburicd for many days in the town. Three-quarters of the population of Leghorn, one of the chief seaports in the north, with about 80,000 inhabitants, have tied. The assistance of the Government is being sought to relievo the distress of tho remainder. Eight hundred towns and villages in southern and central parts of Northern Italy are infected with cholera. The superstitious peasantry aro threatening tho sanitary officials with death, lolieving that tho Government is poisoning the water for the purpose of decimating tho poor.
