THE MONTH'S BUSINESS. A meeting of the Wellington Land Board was held yesterdiy. Present: Jlr. James Mackenzie (Commissioner Crown Lands), Messrs. J. Dawson, J. Georgetti, »nd H. T. Ellingham. APPLICATIONS. The following applications for land wero considered and dealt with as follow :— ■ Mr. T. Pago, of Messrs. Page and Page, Eketahuna, attended with reiorciKft to tho proposed purchase by Mr. W. B. Godfrey, of certain small areas of Crown land-in Block IV, Jlangaone, along the banks of the Jlangaone River. It was resolved to adhere to a previous decision that he must purchase the road as well ,or none at all. Mr. A. G. Anderson.— Approved; but no further.transfers will bo granted until the residential conditions have been fulfilled. Mr. J. S. Dunn wrote, applying to transfer : Section 2, Block 111, Kaitieke, to Mr. J. S. Hunter, the licenseo. of Section 8, Block 11, Kaitieke. The Commissioner pointed out that this was the section which the board approved of being transferred to Mr. - Dunn's brother, P. W. Dunn.—Refused. . Mr. Jas. Cooper applied to transfer Section 8, Block 11, Tiffin, Carrington Settlement, to Mr. B. V. Skeet.—Application recommended. . • . Mrs. R. Macdonald, lessee of Section 16, Block V, Nukumaru. wroto. asking whether the board would permit her to take in 'a partner or partners, or would tho board allow lier to transfer the whole of her interest—lt 'was resolved to advise her that no transier will be permitted at the present time; also that residence is •not due till- March 31, 1914. As.there are two instalments of-rent,-etc., in arrears, amounting to ,£271 125., she should forward this amount at once to the Receiver of'Land'Revenue.' Mr. C. Mr. T. J. Pendray, lesseo of Section 81, Manunui V.S'.,. asked for permission to let a small cottage which is on the section, and also to be allowed to build and let a few cottages.in a similar way.— Resolved no objection to his letting his cottage at present on the land on reasonable anil equitable terms, from week' to week, but he cannot bo given permission to erect and let other buildings in a similar way.

Jlr. James Quinn applied to subdivide his lease of Lot 7 and 22, of Section 7, Block VIII, Jlakotuku, and transfer Lot 22, 2 acres 7 poles, to Mr. F. C. Allen. Declined. Also resolved to rescind tho resolution of' June 29 last approving of the transfer of Lot 7 to Jlr. D. C. Humphrey. With reference to the proposed transfer of F. J. Newson's interest in Section 13, Block IX, Jlanganui, 1181 acres, to C. 11. Smith, his co-partner, Jlr. Smith attended, and the transfer was recommended. Jlr. James M'Donald applied to transfer Section 7, Pahiatua, V.S., 5 acrcs, to Jlr. J. E. Loni. Approved. GENERAL BUSINESS.. AVith reference to the report from tho Crown Lands Ranger, giving result of his appraisement of milling timber on Lots I, 2, 3 in Kaketapauma Block, it was resolved to authorise tho .Commissioner to offer this timber by public auction at such roj-alties and on such terms as ho Mnay-see fit; also, to authorise a refund 'to the Turangarero' Sawmill Company of 6s. Bd., -balance of its deposit of Ji-10, lodged on November 21, 1910, ■ remaining after deduction from same of .£ls 13s. Id., amount actually due for royalty. ■ It was resolved to approve of Section 15, Ohakune V.S, being re-offered on renewable lease. It was resolved to approve of Lots 7 and 8, Block XIX, Ohakune. V.S. area, being re-offered on renewable lease at an annual rent of £2 13s. It was resolved to approve of notice being given to Jlr. Taumata Porihipi that he must remove his. improvements from land formerly known as Scction 81, Block 11, Hunua, not later than November 30 next, ■ and that his occupancy . for this purpose or otherwise-must cease on that, date.

It was resolved to approve of Section 20, Block VI, Owhango. being offered for cash by public auction' at a price to be fixed by the Commissioner. .It was resolved to approve of Section 13, Block 11, Rang-ataua, being re-offered oh renewable lease, at' a rent of £2 per annum.

It was resolved to approve of Mr. C. M'Davitt bein# granted a permit, under Section 130 of the Land Act, 1008, to ocoupy temporarily from year to yedr Section 92, Biock VII, Mangahao: # ;

It was resolved to consider application from Messrs. E. Allen and Co. for a permit. to sraze temporarily on Sections 3 and 4, Block VIII, Makotuku. Approved on terms to' be fixed by the Commissioner. . With reference to application from Messrs. Wntkins Bros, for a lease of Stetion 9G, Manunui V.S. as a mill site for a longer term than seven years, it was resolved to grant them a lease for a teim of three years, under Section 311 of the Land Act, 1908, at a rent of .£7 10s. per annum, with the right of applying during this term for a lease of 21 years, iho section to bo used only for proposes in connection v;ith ; their milling. operations under special qonditions defined by the Commissioner. It was Tesolved to. approve of Mr. H. Clifton ■ being granted a permit to occupy Sections 16, 17, 28, 29, and 30, Marshall V.S., temporarily from year to year at a rent of .£1 13s. per annum, subject to determination at any time. It' was resolved to approve of Mr. F. A. Scrimshaw being granted a permit to occupy Sections 142 and 143, Mnkuri Township, from year to year. It was resolved to recommend that Section 5, Block VII, Owhango Township, be granted in freehold to tho, Church of England. without competition, at the npset price of £16. , An application from Air. E. Morris for right tu occupy about 2} acres adjoining -tho Owhango Township was declined. ... ~ ,A report was received from the Crown Lands Ranger on Mr. G. pain's proposal to allow the payments for timber cut on Section 1, Block V,- Wainuiorn, Longbush Settlement, to stand over for the months of July, August, and September. It was resolved, to advise Mr. Pain that the beard has no objection. Messrs. O. and R. Beere forwarded a memorandiim'of encumbrance for Section 11, Biock XII, Manngnkaretu, and asked for the board's consent to be endorsed thereon. Resolved' not to approve. The Commissioner having reported that an amendment of the loose of Section 4, Block I; Waipawa, is rendered necessary by the taking of . a road through the section,' it was resolved that the lease he amended.

An application was received from Messrs. Reid and Kay for an area of Crown land, being Section 2a, Block VI, Kaitieke, which adjoins their holding, Sections 2 and 2a, Block VI, Kaitieke, in order to obtain a better road frontage.— Refused.

It was resolved to approve of Mr. A. H. Brown being, granted a permit to occupy houso on forfeited Section 41, Manunui V.S.' The secretary of the Longbush Cooperative Dairy Company, Ltd., wrote asking for permission to purchase 1 acre to Mr. R. W. Nunn's Section 3, Block VIII, Huangarua, Longbush Settlement, 2S9a. Or. 35p., for a checse factory site. Tho Minister's consent mil be applied for. A report was received from the Crown Lands Ranger to the effect that Mr. J. Keville was not residing in a genuine and bona-fide manager on Section 5, Block X, Jlakotuku. A letter was' also received from Mr. Iveville on the subject, and after full consideration it was resolved that, if bone-fide residence is not effected, the forfeiture must proceed.

The Commission reported that the lessee of Section 11, Block 11, Tiflin, had surrendered a portion of his section for a school site. It was resolved that the lease bo called in and amended accordingly. . Mr. H. Buller, lessee of Section .17, Block IX, HunUa, North Waimarino 1.F., wrote explaining why ho had not taken up - residence. Further extension declined.

Messrs. Arrowsmith and Longhnan, solicitors, Taihape. wrote with reference to tho forfeiture of Mr. T. Bason's in>terest in Lot 1, Section 75, Taihape V. Resolved .to reconfirm the forfeiture of Mr. Bason's interest, but' to withhold registration in the meantime. Mr. J. Dyer, lessee of Section 33, Ohakunc V.S., wrote stating that he is the proprietor of' the Railway' Refreshment Rooms at Ohakune, and will bo unable to comply with tho residential conditions for about Q years, and wishes exemption for that period.. If this is approved, he is willing to effect tho required improvements. It was resolved to advise him that residence is not due for about sixteen -months, and that he should effect the required improvements forthwith, as otherwise his interest is liablo to bo forfeited. He should, therefore, state by what date the .£39 required to be expended, will be spent in-improvements. With reference to tho subdivision and transfer of Section 23, Taihape, it was resolved that if the original capital valno of the roads required to be dedicated is paid, the matter can proceed as it has been finally approved by the Minister and board, subject to this condition. , Mr. D. O'Shea wrote with referenco to the board's notice calling upon him to show cause why his interest in Section 2, Block I, Hunua, 203 acres, should not bet declared forfeited. It was _ uvcldcd to adviso Mr. o!Shea that if his wife will reside on the section, that will be in compliance with the- Act. Mr. H. M. Soloway, lessee of Section 17, Block I, Kakahi V.S., wrote with reference to tho proposed forfeiture of his land for non-residence. Resolved to take no action for the present. A report was received from the Crown Lands Ranger to the (-[feet that Mrs. N. M. Carson, lessee of Section 73, Taihape V.S., has got all. the timber on the ground for the erection of a liotiso costing about .£6OO, and will be in residence immediately tho house is finished—in about three months' time. Resolved to accept as satisfactory for the present. Mr. B. M'Donald, lessee of Section 15, Bl'k.' IX, Hunua, North 'Waimarino 1.F.5., wrote explaining why he had not yet taken up his residence bn the land. Resolved to grant him three months' extension. EDUCATION RESERVES. Education Reserves. The Under-Secretary for Lands forwarded, . for the consideration of tihe board, a proof print of a form of lease for Education Reserves under the Public Bodies Leases Act, IDOS, as provisionally adopted by the recent conference of Commissioners of CTown Lands.

It was resolved to adopt the form a£ printed, with tho exception of the alternativo clause numbered 10a, proposed to be'used in cases other than renewals. It was considered unnecessary to include this clause, as the board already has full power, under Section 2 (3) of the Education Reserves Amendment Act, 1910,, to lease Education Reserves when it considers it desirable under the ordinary settlement conditions prescribed by the Land Act, including provisions for compulsory residence and improvements, and would suggest, therefore, that where it is thought desirable to introduce residential or other conditions ordinary Land Act renewal leases be issued under tho abovequoted section of the Education Reserves Amendment Act, 1910. - OTHER MATTERS. Tho Commissioner was authorised to grant a year-to-year grazing lease of the strip of open land fronting Section 28, Block VIII, Makotuku district, adjoinin? Ohakune. It was resolved to authorise the Commissioner to have the milling timber appraised on Section 10, Block V, Karioi, and also to offer in village lots the por'tion fronting tho Main Road where the milling timber has been d-sstroyed by fire.

It was resolved to approve of Mr. T. G. Scott being granted a permit to occupy Sections 5G to 62 and 73 Malcuri township for one year, subject to determination at any time and an adjustment of rent on three months' notice.

Mr. A. 31. Bnrney applied to transfer the lease of Spctions 1 and 2, Block XIX, Ohakune V.S., to E. G. Allsworth.— Recommended.

Mr. J). 11. Cole applied to transfer his .lease of Part 10 of Section 8„-Mackenzie V.S., to G. T. Cole.—Granted. Tho Crown lands ranger reported that tho Messrs. R. C. and J. H. Mabey, of Section 84, Block XIV, Belmont, Epuni Hamlet, on September 22, 1909, were given time to tolas up their residence arc still residing at the Upper. H\ttt, where they have a carrying business.—lt was resolved to ask them to show cause why their interest should not be declared for'foitcd. ' The Crown lands ranger reported that the following selectors .had not completed the ring-fencing of their, sections on account of standing bush, and recommended that they be given 12 months to complete their fencing: Section Ba, Block V, Tiffin; Section 15, Block 11, Tiffin; Section 22, Block 11, Tiffin—lt was resolved to give the time asked for.
