BOYS FOR AUSTRALIA.
RAGGED SCHOOL UNION PROJECT. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Adelaide, August 31. Sir John Kirk, who is visiting Australia on behalf of the Ragged School Unioa of Britain, with tho object of, if possible, arranging for tho settlement in Australia of boys belonging to the schools, was accorded a civic reception at the Town Hall. In a speech, Sir John said that while Australia was building up a vast continent they were 4 striving in the Motherland to build up human material, and ho hoped to be nble to bring the two together.
Sir John Kirk, J.P., director of the Ragged School Union and Sha'ftesbury Society, London, is endeavouring to arrange for the placing of a large number of boys in suitable employment in tho Commonwealth. In- a recent letter to a friend in Sydney he said:—"l quite agree as to tho truo remedy for our congested popv'ationhere; it is' to occupy our own lands overseas. I air, hoping the object-lessons which are so nbendant this year will have tho effect of removing prejudice, and opening the eyes of our people to their great inheritance." Sir John Kirk, who had the honour of knighthood conferred upon him by the late King Edward VII, for his great work on behalf of the poor of London, will arrive at Melbourne on September 12, and at Sydney on September 20. From thero he will proceed to Brisbane, Tasmania, New Zealand, Fiji, and Canada.
