FORECAST AND SUMMARY. Present indications are for high westerly and south-west winds generally. Changeable ' weather probable everywhere. a. cloudy and stormy phase, particularly, in tho south, preceding more settled conditions generally. The barometer has a rising' tendency everywhere. Wet and stormy weather has been experienced on the West Coast and southern districts of the South Island, and fair to cloudy conditions elsewhere. I'almerston, August 31.—An equinoctial gale has been blowing all day, with clouds of dust. Kain is threatening. Shannon, August 31.—Very windy, but fine. ........ Otaki, August 31.—Fine, but windy. Maeterton, August 31.—At 6 o'clock- tonight the licv. A. Ilodge reported for tne preceding 24 hours aS follows ture in shade, maximum 65dcg., minimum 64deg., mean 59deg.; earth radiation, 48.5 (leg.; earth temperature (Ift. below surface), 49.5deg.; wind, gusty, west; weather, moderate gale from the west, carrying clouds of dust; temperature warm; sky gloomy to-night. The total rainfaiU for August was 1.40 inches, rain having fallen on 9 days. Tho heaviest fall wa3 on the 27th, being 61 points. The total for July wa3 7.43 inches. August has been a very dry but pleasant month. Moderate wind and galc3 liavo been blowing during the last two days. An earth tremor was felt on August 29. Carterton, August 31.—The weather today was line, but windy. Indications point 1 to rain. . Featherston, August 31.—T0-day was fine, with passing clouds. % A heavy galo from tho N.W. .blew during last night, toijt has now moderated. Greytown, August 31.—The weather is fine, but windy from the Taxaruas.
Hastings, August 31.—T0-day the weather has jieon extremely mild, a warm wind prevailing throughout the day.
