DRILL HALL ACCOMMODATION.

CIVIC CO-OPERATION INVITED. With regard to tho desire of thn defence authorities to secure adequate spaco or hall accommodation for drill and lecuire purposes in connection with the new defence scheme the following circular lias been issued from headquarters to officers commanding military district's:—

"In centres whore a company or more is to lie trained, the ci:y or municipal authorities should lie asked to co-operate in the universal training movement by giving- the use of the municipal hail or other suitable building at a peppercorn rent, or for the cost of lighting and cleaning. In centres where only a half company or squad, or even smaller body of men, is available for training, county council balls, or any Government or local body's building should l;e asked fcr from tho local authorities at similar rates, or tho use of Government schcolhouscs obtained by arrangement with education boards or school committees at a cost for clearing and lighting only. At most schoolhor.ses there is a shed outside or a square of paved ground where, when fine, drill can be practised. Flare torches, as used by bands, would sufficiently light up .such sheds or yards. When the weather is cold or wet theoretical instruction could be given in the schoolroom. The Education Hoard this morning had before it' an application from General Godley for the use of the schools in the back-blocks in connection with military training. The board refused tho application, on the ground that damage, was likely to result to the school furniture and premises, and the motion that each application bo considered on its merits was lost.
