HUTT AND PETONE

Last evening tho Girls' Friendly Society, in connection ' with St. Augustine's Church, Petone, held their annual concert. There was a very fair attendance, and the efforts on the part, of tho performers were appreciated. Tho contributors were: Misses Kibblewhite, Hill, Shearer, Sebley, Bale, R.odgers, Bernstein, Brooks, Snell, Packard, M'Jnness, Gun tor, and Braddock (2); Messrs. Mason, Bell, Clough, and Gray. Several glees were giveo by members of the society. Miss Kibblewhite played the accompaniments, and Mr. Clough was musical director. At a recent meeting of delegates from the Upper Hutfc and Petono Rille Clubs, it was practically decided to amalgamate. Arrangements for the annual concerts in connection with the Petono District High School, which open to-night for a season of three nights, are now well forward, and everything points to a most successful function. Over 330 pupils aro taking part in the programme, and of these'2oo will appear in fancy costume. The items are well varied, and comprise school songs and clriLl, action songs,, fancy dances, and humorous numbers. Appropriate to the year the chief effort of the school will bo devoted to tho production of an Empire Pageant, in which one hundred children will take part. The monthly rally of tho Hutt NoLicense League was held at Petono this week. The hall .was packed, and an excellent programme was submitted, items being given by tho Misses Forster, Watkins, Burton, Kirk. Mrs. Usniar, Messrs. Dolahimtz, Herr Sonthcin, and Master Tempest. The speaker was the Rev. J. F. Watt. As an outcome of an inspection by the Works Committee of the Hutt Borough Council of certain buildings, 'it has been decided to sue tho builder for alleged breach of the by-laws,, and the owner for allowing the premises to Iμ occupied without providing proper sanitary arrangements. Dr. Hector, Health Officer to the Lower Hutt Borough, reported one case of diphtheria in the borough at Monday night's meeting.
