At Northland last evening Mr. A. L. H.ordman, M.P., said that a gentleman in New Zealand who had written to an. eminent authority in England, had been informed that no instance could bo recalled in Britain of a Judge having received any other remuneration than his salary. The principle underlying this was that once a Judge's salary was fixed he should be absolutely free and independent of Parliament. A trio of Maoris at the Opera House last evening caused great amusement among tho audience. . The Native love of horse-flesh is well known, and when they sr.w.a horse led down a flight of stairs they evidently considered it a wonderful performance, and made no secret of their thoughts. The racecourse scene in the "Chance of a Lifetime" also greatly interested them, and they ' shouted and waved their handkerchiefs with even more vigour than tho "supers" on,tho stage. They thoroughly enjoyed the performance, indeed, became quite a part of it, as far as those in the vicinity wero concerned. Laiikshou's, Lambton Quay, are now holding their half-yearly sale, and, according to their advertisement which appears in this issue, writing materials nave bee.i reduced to a remarkably low figure. A ladies' tailor is lequired by To Aro House, Cuba Street, Wellington. Messrs. Gorton and Sons, Ltd., have a preliminary notice in this issue giving particulars- of a. sale of high-class freehold land to be held in their sale rooms, Fcilding, on September 9.
