WHALING ON LARGER SCALE.
PURCHASE OF S.S. BUCEROS. An Auckland-owned steam collier, the Hauanui, has been engaged in whaling on the New Zealand coast'for 12 mouths or so with gratifying results (says tin? Auckland correspondent of the Christchurch "Press"). A Norwegian trader similar to that vessel is expected to arrive in the Dominion towards the end of the year, and a firm at Akaroa, Messrs. Wilkins and Sons, are making inquiries as to tlio prospects of the industry. A Norwegian, Mr. Johan Brydc, is also interested. In a communication to Captain Thomas Cook, of Auckland, Mr. Brydc says that ho has recently purchased the big si amor Buceros (GGOO tons), a previous visitor to New Zealand, and is fitting her up as a floating factory, where all tho work of converting whalo into oil, etc., can be done. Ho asks for accurate information as to the seasons for the humpbacks and right whales, anil as to tho harbours most suitablo for them. Captain Cook, who has been oTfcred the command of the Buceros has replied ' that Whangamumu and Stewart Island aro tho mest suitable places for both whales in season. '
