Mr. J. .A. Valentine, headmaster of Tiinaru Main School, has been fleeted to the seat on the Teachers' Superannuation Hoard rondered vacant by the resignation of Mr. T. Hughes, who represented the South Island contributors. There were two nomimlicns—Mr. Valentine, who polled 52!) voles, and Mr. K. A. Just, of the, Lyl-tnlton District High School, who, polled 521 votes.

Mr; Justice Chap'iiin is expected back in Wellington about the second week in September, and will leave here shortly afterwards tor Gisborne. Tho Chiel'.Jusliee (Sir ](ol>evt Stout.) is also exacted back in Wellington about tho middle of September.

Mr. Henry D. lialicr, Consul for America in Sydney, has returned to Wellington from New South Wales to complete) certain official reports he is writing on trade conditions in the Dominion.

Dr. Karl Kuin, a celebrated German explorer, will vis-it New Zealand early in November. Dr. Kum is an authority on the Sudan and its people, and he recently completed a journey from the Niger to the Nile. While in" Now Zealand he will lecture on scientific, geographical, and exploration problems.

Mr. E. N. Liflilon, of Wanganui, who came to Wellington to attend the 'Acclimatisation Societies' Conference, was laid aside by illness. He is now reported to be recovering, and should be in condition to leave for his home in Wanganui about a week hence.

A sitting of tho Conciliation Court will be held this morning at 10.30 o'clock to deal.with (he woollen mills' dispute. The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr. P. Ilally, will preside. The assessors will be as follow:—For the employers: Mr. T. _ K. Leithkad, manager of the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills; Mr. Walter Hamsden, manager of tho Petone Woollen Mills; and Mr. A. K. Donue, secretary of the Wellington Woollen Mills. For the employees, Mr. H. C. Hevell, Kaiapoi, Mr. D. Dunderdale, Petone, and Mr. A. Walker, Petone (all employed at mills) will appear.

Mr. W. S. Inman, secretary of the Wellington Club, who is at present on a visit to the Old Country, has been appointed secretary of the Manchester Club at Manchester. Mr. Inman was formerly a purser on the White Star liners trading to New Zealand, and became very well known and deservedly popular with trippers whilst holding that position on tho Gothic. Mr. Inman is a member of tho Wellington Liedcrlafel.

Mr. Edward Darby, an'old resident of Auckland, died on Friday after a short illness. He is the last of liio Darby family of three brothers (Patrick, John, and Edward) and two sisters (Mrs. narkins and Mrs. Shields). Ho leaves two children, both in the teaching profession, Mr. E. J. Darby, of Russell, and Mrs. I. M. K. Brown, of Taupaki. His wife predeceased him by five years.
