SHIELD HOCKEY.

OF. POOR QUALITY* THE HOME TEAM DOWNS NELSON. Bad hockey? Yes, it was nbout the poorest shield match which we have seen this season—the contest on Saturday at Day'j Bay between "Wellington and Nelson. The locals triumphed by G goals to i, and that is about tho best thing that can bo said about them.. The Nelson scores were by no means "things ol beauty," being of tho lone hand variety, whilo the abscnco of Loader and Hickeon from the ranks of the homo men left a depressing mark on their combination. Shortly alter commencing Parton penalised tho local team by giving "sticks," ond, from the free-hit Nelson rushed into the circle, and VVhitwoll put on the first goal. Nelson 1, Wellington 0. Wellington then carried play into tho opposing twenty-five, and Salek centred, G. Strack's shot missing. Hurst removed play down field, "Wellington conceding a corner, from which the local forward's sccured, and play returned to tho centre. Nelson vorked back, bupt Salek secured, and passed to G. Strack, who carricd tho ball into the striking area, but- once again failed to equalise. Wellington wcro presently awarded a corner hit, and this time G. Strack made no mistake. Ono all. After restarting Wellington broko away, and play remained in tho circlo for somo time, lrhen a timely centre by Parton resulted in Campbell securing the second gcv.l. Wellington 2, Nelson 1. After tho teams got to work again Nelson were awarded a corner, but Wellington frustrated them, and a few minutes later G. Strack reached their circle, the ball going behind. Good work by Hurst on the right wing saw that player send in a good centre, from which Boyes equalised Eho score. Wellington 2, Nelson 2. Nelson continued on the attack, and Whitwell secured a third goal. Nelson 3, Wellington 2. Somo doubt was expressed as to the bona fides of this goal, as the ball appeared 'to pass through tho net from the outside. Wellington now attacked, but the visiting backs cleared, and the local backs were on the defensive for somo time. Then in his own twenty-five llurst sccured, and moved tho venue to the Wellington end, M'Eldowney sending the ball out to the line. The spell ended with tho score in Nelson's favour by 3 to 2. • Tho opening of tho second spell saw Wellington rush play into Nelson's territory, where the visiting backs were pressed for some time. Tho local forirards, however, were showing up better now, and tho score was equalised by Parton sending the ball on to G. Strack. who passed, to Salek. This player centred and G. Davies put on tho finishing touch. B—3. Play remained in the Nelson twenty-five, and G. Strack sent in a 6hot from a penalty hit, but Eyder again stopped it'. Shortly after Nelson secured possession from a corner hit, and play came into the local twenty-five, Parton eventually obtaining tho ball and sending'it out to t'he line. From the lineout the Wellington forwards sent in two or three shots, but with no result, and play moved t'o' the contro of the field, where tho local forwards broko away, tho ball going on to G. Davies who ran through tho opposition, and secured Wellington's fourth goal. Nelson reopened by rushing play into tho local twentyfive, bnt Parton again turned them back, and Murphy had a shot that went outside the net. Once again the visitors carried the ball down tho.field, and this time they were successful in gaining tho circle, but they conld not penetrate tho ' defence; From a line-out, however, Nelson again invaded tho circle and M'Eldowney failed to stop the ball, the consequence being that Boyes equalised. This woko Wellington up, and they attacked from the "bully," but G. ■Strack onco more failed to beat Eyder. Still keeping up the attack G. Davies secured, and passed to G. Strack who was this timo succcssful in putting the local team in the lead. 5—4. Nelson Testarted with a rush, but the local backs intercepted, and Wellington reached the circle where Murphy added the final goal from a scramble. 6-4. There was little else of note afterwards. Messrs. Falconer and Carver were the referees. •
