SIR JAMES CARROLL AND THE MAURI WAR.
Sir,—When. Sir James Carroll was knighted you gavo a brief history of his early career, and you referred to him as having taken part iu tho war around Napier and East Coast. You stated iu one of your locals last' week that some friends were entertaining the hon. gentleman on the occasion of his 51th birthday. Would you be good enough to footnote this and state what years tho trouble was on in Hawko's Bay and tho ago tho hon, gentleman would bo at the time?—l am, etc., EX-CONSTABULARY MAN. [On the authority of "Who's Who" in New Zealand, it is stated that Sir James Carroll, with other boys, volunteered for service in the Urewera campaign in 1870 (when Sir James would be 13 years of age), and that ho was specially mentioned in dispatches, receiving tho Now Zealand medal and a bonus 'of £n0 for services in Hamlin's expedition against To Kooti.J
