MATTER'S OF INTEREST AT THE WELLINGTON UNION. The Wellington Rugby Union met last night. Mr. 'sf. Brown presided. A telegram road stated that the 1 1 aranaki team which is to W ellnitfton on Saturday is to arrive by tiifl 0.22 p.m. train (Napier mail) to-day. ]t was decided to have a, local referee for the match. . The referees suggested, from winch a selection i,s to l>3 made, are: Messrs. Simpson, Card, Atkinson, T. Jones, Meredith, ami Neilson. „ . It was decided to offer Marlborough September 10 for a match in Marlborough. September 1G was offered Wairarapa as the dale for a match. It was decided to inform the Bush Districts (Woodville, Palliate, ele.) that Wellington could not offer a date. As to Ihe final for the championship between Oriental and Athletic, the match ivas set down for September 2. The question of whether or not all matches should be played, or all but the principal match declared "off" arose, and it was decided to have all tho gaiiK-s played. A discussion took placo on (be matter of a cliargo for .the cup final. It was first decided to make tho charge sixpencp in preference t'o one shilling. Mr. Perry subsequently moved to rescind that decision. Tho motion was carried, and it was then decided to make the charge Is Mr. Terry and others urged that extra funds would lie needed in the near future for the retaining of the park ground, and it was urged that, if the public looked at it in that light, they would not object to tho extra charge;, they would rather pay sixpence extra for cup finals than lose the park for llugbv. The Wellington Referees' Association wrote intimating that they accepted "tho union's offer of a conference to discuss matters of difference that' exist." They asked to bo informed of a convenient date. Next Wednesday was fixed as the day of (he conference. ' A request by the Oriental Club for a final match for their third-class team against Porirua to arrange the championship was refused. SOUTHERN CLUB. Tho annual smoke concert of tho Southern Football Club was held in St. Peter's Schoolroom last night. Mr. 11. J. litzgibbon, president of the club, was in tho chair,. ami 'there was a very lar&'e attendance of members and their lrionds, tis well as representatives of other football clubs. Tho trophies won for tho past year were presented to the successful members during tho evening. A lengthy toast list was honoured, the principal being "Tho King," proposed by tho chairman, Mr. l'itzgibhon; "The Rugby Union," proposed by Mr. Hardie, and responded to by Mr. Perry j "Tho Soul hem Club," proposed by Mr. J. P. Luke, M.l'., and responded to by Mr. P. C. Peters;' "Tho Referees," proposed by Mr. H. Mortenson, and responded to by Mr. A. E. Neilson. In responding to the toast of "Tho Southern Club," Mr. Peters said that the club had turned out somo really good men, and the selectors had not recognised this fact. Tho chairman presented medals to tho •following:—Senior team: Messrs. G. Bradley (back); and E.'J. Houlihan (forward); junior team: Messrs. .7, Tai-ker (back), and A. Parker (forward); third fifteen: Messrs. B, Doherty (back), and H. Cowlev (forward); fourth fifteen: Messrs. W. White (back), and P. E. Green (forward); fifth fifteen: Messrs. A. Howard (back), and C. Gindcrs (forward). In presenting the medals to Messrs. Bradley and Houlihan, tho chairman stated that,-it was tho general opinion among the followers of Rugby foatbill that "these (wo players were among the best in this city. TARANAKi, 12; MANAWATU, 3. (By Telesraph.—.Spccinl Correspondent.! Palmcrston, August 23. The football match between ManawatuHorowhenua and Taranaki was played here to-day in good weather, and resulted in a win for the visitors aftei an even and interesting game, by 12 points to 3. The local men quite held their own, and had 'hard luck in not making the scoro more in keeping with tho game.' From tho start Taranaki were- kept busy, and the locals early misled a couple of easy chances. Tho Yellow forwards presently showed their mettle, and began to get oil verms with the local men. It was not long before a score was registered, Roberts crossing the line for the visitors. Before half time was-called two more tries had been Added through the agency of Taylor, In:'; none were converted, anil the spell ended in Taranalii's favour by 9 points In the second spell somo splendid play was witnessed, Rawiri, the llorowhenua wing three-quarter, playing a brilliant game. He was nearly over a couplc of times. After a warm attack the Greens scored from a forward rush Winiuta, touching down. Later on, however,, Taranaki added another try after a fine passing bout, and the game ended with tho scorc as stated. The third interprovincial football match b;t\voen Wansanui and Southland was piaye.'l at Invereargill to-day. Tho weather, .-which had been decidedly wintry during the past week, still continued bad throughout tho progress of the match, and militated against a good display by the back divisions. The visitors were eon=Mjiient!y prevented from playing up to their best form, although several of (heir backs showed individual brilliance.
The strong westerly wind was in favour of Waugauui in tho first spell, but tho Southland forwards, made n success of most of their opportunities, whilst their backs also ably assisted. Jf'Necc-e secured the only try of tho game, and Martin converted. Tn the second spell Wangamii made successive onslaught.?, and went close to scoring. The local p'-iyers were, however, equal to tlic occasion, and, stnving oli tho opposition, won a fast'and inter" esting game by 5 points to nil. THE ORDINARY WEDNESDAY MATCHES. ARTILLERY, 13; ATHLETIC, 11. Artillery beat .Athletic by 13 points to 11, after a close game. It was a good, hard, evenly-contested forward jran'o throughout, -and Athletic are entitled to some recognition of the fact that they did hold their heavier opponents in checli. Tries were obtained for Artillery by Chapmnn and Irvine, and Slattcry kick?d a penalty goal, and potted nnotlic. For Athletic scores were obtained by Gosling, and Cordine. Mount: converted once, and alto kicked a penalty goal. Mr. A. Thompson was referee.
TRAMWAY, 26; ORIENTAL, NIL. Tramway easily defeated Oriental by 2f> points to nil. There was not iinich to choose between the forwards of each team, but the Tramway hacks were much superior to their opponent?. The following scored tries for Tramway :—Cooper, Clarke, Salvin, Alexander, Bowie (2). Clarke eonverted three tries, and BramW one. Mr. 0' Sullivan was in charge of the came.
