As a sequel to the fracas outside tho drillshed on August 9, when tho senior cadets were being medically examined, York Robert Gibbons was convicted of throwing a stone and breaking a window in. tho drillshed; also of assaulting Arca-Sergt.-Major Oiiara by throwing ,a stone. Tho magistrate severely condemned such larrikinism and hoodlumism on the part of lads, and fined the accused altogether i>2 75., in default seventeen days' imprisonment. THE-POLICE KNOCK.
Greymouth, August 22. Tlie licensee of the Hamilton Hotel, Cobtten, was fined £o and his license was endorsed, for rofusing to admit a ccnstablo when he demanded admittance. VOLUNTEER HALL BURNT. Dunedin, August 22. The old Volunteer Hall in Mosgiel, together with a frnit store occupied by Mrs. Smith, was destroyed by firo on Sunday morning. The store belonged" to Mr. Hitchon, of Milton, and was insured for £3(10 in the New Zealand, office, the furniture for .£2OO in the Victoria, and _, the fittings for .£SO in tho Victoria. The hall, the contents of which wero owned by Thomas Fogg, were insured for £500 in tho Northern Assurance. WEST COAST NATIVE LANDS. Grsymouth, August 23. At a largely-attended meeting of Native leaseholders, it was. resolved to ask the Government what they intended to do this session in regard to ratifying ths freehold or an extended lease. A meeting will be held on a reply being received. Strong efforts are being mado to have the matter settled this session.
PALMERSTON AS LAW CENTRE. Palmerston N., August 22. At the Supreme Court this morning Sir Robert Stont remarked, apropos of tbo heavy Court list, that the Court would have to sit early and lato to got through. It was quite evident that Palmerston was becoming so important that an extension of time would have to be granted for Supreme TJourt sittings.
