EXPLOSION AT KAITANGATA MINE.

About one o'clock yesterday an. explosioii of gas occurred in tho liaitangata coalmine, blowing out oiie of tho stoppings, and knocking over two men.(Tho*. Carson, and Hawkins). Tho men wero stunned tor a time, but 60on recovered,-and-wero ablo' to walk home. The explosion occurred in No. 5 dip, near tho msin workings, and there wero a number of men working in tho vicinity. Tho.noiso was heard all over the section, and the men stopped work and rushed to tho pit mouth. lho afternoon shift then refused to go on, and, consequently, nothing was done in tho mine yesterday afternoon. Tho spot where tho explosion took place was ono of those areas where .bad gases arc known to exist, and tho place had been "stopped up" to keep tho gases in. Ihcro was a blow-out, however, and tho givs i3t>™d. This occurrence, fallowing on the drath of Jusopb Carson last Thursday, tho death of Wm. M'Ghco from a similar cause in May, and a chapter of minor accidents, ii-s caused manv minors to become , "scared," and, yesterday, after tli« explosion, a number of them declared their intention of seeking employment elsewhere.
