UNIVERSITY DEBATING SOCIETY.
A woman's oratorical contest ns held by the Victoria Collego Debating Society on Saturday evening. Eight lady members of tlio society were brave enough to face the large, audience present'. Each competitor had selected some woman of note as- her heroine, and she lauded her virtues and apologised for her less admirable qualities (in some cases with eloquence). The competitors were: Miss Marshall (Mary Queen of Scots), Miss North (Queen Elizabeth), Miss Casey (Marie Antoinette), Miss Nicholls (Joan of Arc), Miss Palmer (Charlotte Corday), Mis'. Dowling (Lady Jane Grey), Miss Currie (Florence Nightingale), and Miss Ilursthouse .(Margaret of Anjou). The winner was chosen by the vote of all the members of the audience, the'ballot resulting as follows: —Miss Nicholls, 1; Miss Palmer, 2; Miss Dowling, 3. While the votes were being counted an impromptu men's oratorial competition was held, the speeches being marked by a good deal of wit. In three weeks' time the Plunket .medal competition, the great oratorical events of the year, will be held in-the Town Hall. ■
