ANNUAL MEETING. Tho adjourned annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute of Journalists was held yesterday afternoon, Hr. J. J. Grealish, presiding. A committer was set up to amend ByLaw 30 (relating to suspension of members) as directed by a resolution of the mooting. The Law of Lil>cl Amendment Act thr!. was passed last session was discussed, and a motion was carried in which the ir.stituto recorded its "dissatisfaction with the Law of Libel Amendment Act. as a measure which in some respects is hostile to the public interest and to the full power of the press for good." It was also decided to send a deputation to the Government to surest' the amendment of the Act in certain particulars. One amendment' ashed for by the institute is the repeal of Section 11. which removes tlio of trial by jury in cases of criminal defamation or defamatory libel. This section emnowers magistrates to deal .summarily with such caws. The subscription for the year was'fixed at 7s. Gd„ and it was resolved to abolish the entrance fop. Mr. C. AVi'tnn. who had been c]ecte<' secretary at Saturday's meet'iiT. inti'vaUd that he was unwilling to accent the secretaryship. and Mr. 11. 0. Browne was elected to the position.
