A WOMAN'S ACT, MAN SERIOUSLY SHOT IN HEAD. (By Teleeraph—Press Association.! Auckland, August 21. Thomas Madigan was shot in the head at his father's house in 'Eglinton Street, Parnell, on Saturday night, and now lies in tho District Hospital in a serious condition. Subsequently tho polico arrested Annio Al'Connoll, a middle-aged married woman, on a c.'iargo of attempting to murder Aladigar,. The parlies concerned have been living together for three or four years, and a quarrel between them terminated in Aladigan being wounded bv a-bullet from a revolver', the missile penetrating his right car and lodging cither in the base ot the skull or in the muscles of his neck. Jladigan was taken to Parnell Police Station at 10.35 p.m.. on Saturday. It was at once seen ho was injured, and, on being questioned, he informed the constable that ho had been shot through the ear witli a pistol. On being asked who did il, Jladigan replied: "That woman." A constable asked him if he meant Annie Jl'Connell. Jladigan replied: "Yes, she shot nie at the old man's place."

Aladigan, whoso wound was bleeding, was taken in a cab to a doctor, who, after examination, said that he was of opinion that the bullet had lodged in the base of the skull. The injured man was then removed t'o tho hospital. Constables Jlagee and Gatward were dispatched to arrest the woman M'Conncll and take possession of the revolver. c f nrnv ed at the house they found the wounded man's father, James Jladigan, his wile, Mary Aladigan, and Annie Jl'Ccnnell. All three aro alleged to havo been under tho influence of liquor.

As soon as the police appeared in the /house Mary Aladigan commenced to ravo about Annio Jl'Connell having shot her son lorn. In a statement she mado to the : constables she said: "Tom Went to lie down on the bed in the back room,'and asked mo not to allow Annie Jl'Connell jn 'he room. Jl'Connell then took a lighted candle and went into the room, and a few minutes afterwards I heard a shot,-and I went in and found my son on tho floor, bleeding. He said: 'ftet a doctor; I'm • done for.' " ■

At 9.30 p.m. Tom Madigan went out and got a gallon of beer and two square "riggers." The old man was in bed. They were all drink jug when Thomas Madigan caught hold of her and accused her of familiarity -with other men. He struck her twice on tho head with his first, and then wont into the bedroom. She followed and picked up a revolver off tho table anil fired. She. tokl tho police that she did not know what she fired.at. - The woman said she had bought the revolver herself, "as Tom'was always provoking her." A fivechambered revolver containing ono spent and one unspent cartridge was found on the' floor.

Tho constables arrested Jl'Connell, and took her to the Central Police Station. She will bo charged in the Police Court this morninj? with attempted murder, and a remand will bo applied for. Jfadigan himself was very much muddled on Saturday night, and could not give a rational account of tho shootir.g incident; On admission to tho hospital the doctors said that, he was in no -immediate danger, and last, evening his condition, though serious, was not alarming. The wound Was examined under the Xrays at 11 a.m. yesterday, but the exact position of the -bullet was not ascertainable. Madigan is a single man, years of age. . ' . _ _ Later. At the. Police Court Annie Jl'Connell was charged with attempted murder. Accused is a woman of about -10 years of ago. She seemed to position acutely, and sobbed ' loudly. Chief Detective Jlarsack risked for an adjournment for a week as Jladigan was ct. present in the hospital in a serious condition. Counsel for accused applied for bail, but the magistrate at once replied that ho i would not'consider such a. request, and the case was adjourned for seven days.
