Y.M.C.A.

ADDEESS BY THE HON. A..T. NGATA.

There was a very large attendance at ™ m s meeting which was held at tho < 7, s ' ev< mii)g, when tho Hon. 4. I. Ngata. M'.l'., gave an interesting address on "The Future of the Maori." lie speaker interestingly discussed tho Maoris probable future development in a civilised environment, and suggested that tho Native race was more or less laced with extinction, as a distinct race, whichever way he lived. In the aboriginal Btato the natural increase in po-pulation would no doubt have been arrested by constant tribal wars, while in tha civilLseu state, under sound education and moro completely l equipped in every way for social intercourse with his friend the pakena, the probabilities were that he .would ultimately, by intermarriage with the white race, become absorbed altogether. He ventured to think that such a contingency was not on alarming one, for tho Maori possessed certain racial qualities which were worthy of attention in any discussion of the eugenics of the subject, and a slight dash of Maori blood m a European would augment rather than depreciate his efficiency in whatever walk of life ho might happen to be. Mr. 11. N. Holmes a.lso addressed tho pthenng, and Mr. V. 11. Welte, a member of Sousa's Band, contributed a trumpet solo.
