ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
KILLED BY A FALL OF STONE. Dunedin, August 18. At the inquest on Joseph Carson, killed in the Kaitangata. mine on Thursday, tho evidence showed that deceased and others were repairing the damage done to tho timber by a runaway roof. Ho was thu9 exposed, and it was whilo erecting a temporary structure supporting it that a stono fell and crushed Carson. Death ensued in a few minutes. A great deal of evidence was takon as to the power of a deputy in a mine, and whether the men were sufficiently warned of the danger. After 45 minutes' retirement the jury returned a verdict that deceased was killed by a fall of stone, that the doputy erred in not recognising tho dangerous nature of the stone, and the'jury were also of opinion that a deputy's duty should bo more clearly defined. INFANT'S BODY FOUND. Christchurch, August 18. The body of a recently-born female infant was discovered in front of an unoccupied houso at 271 Tuam Street East this moaning. The house is in tho hands of painters, who are renovating the exterior, and tho body was found close to a hedgo by one of tho men employed in the painting work. CORONER'S VERDICT. , , ' Carterton, August 18. • An inquest was held yesterday on the body of Fanny Frances Goodiu, found drowned in a creek at Dalefield, before the Coroner, Mr.' J. T. M. Hornsby. Deceased, aged sixty-six years, the wife of Mr. Robert Goodin, farmer, Dalefield, had wandered intoi' tho shallow creek and drowned herself in six inches of water. A verdict was returned of suicide whilst temporarily insane. BODY BOUND IN A RIVER. Gisborne, August 18. A body found in the 'W'aiapu River is supposed to bo that of William Douglas, a young man who has been ■ missing recently. Timaru, August 18. A young man was run down by a motorcar at Washdyk© to-day. He was not very seriously hurt
