Tho Taranaki circular road race, which representatives of the big cycling firms stato is destined to become tho premier cycle''road'race-of Australasia, was run to-dny under unfavourable weather conditions. Tho coursc was from New Plymouth to Opunake, thenco - to Eltham, and thence back to New. Plymouth—a total distance of 101 miles. It is. said to be tho longest circular track in tho world for a cycle road race, and the . prize money the largest vet offered in the Australasian colonies. Of 87 entrants .no fewer than (15 started out on a wet road and in drizzling rain. Thr> road, over a succession' of hills, was for the most part very.heavy, with the ufcual winter patches of new. metal, yet surprisingly good time were recorded. ,Tas. Clarke, of Palmerston North, a youth of 19 years, was first home, and made the fastest-time. Ho started oft' the 32niins. mark,'"and covered the routo in G hours 17mins. 59 Msec. He secured .£SO in cash and a .£'so challenge cup, racing bicycle, and other trophies, the whole being of a total value of nearly .£l5O.
