THE MOKAU SCANDAL.
f.ir,—The third week of the session has commenced, yet no progress made to inquire into the actions of the Cabinet, in this matter beyond shelving it to the Native Affairs Committee. This is what Sir James Carroll terms a full and complete inquiry. It is patent the decision is settled before tho inquiry even commences. Two committees have already sat and reported on this ease, but no regard has been paid,by the Government to the recommendations. This third one will doubtless further shelter the Government, and as it is intended stitle all further inquiry. A public inquiry on oath with tho press admitted would be the only medium' of the public getting the farts which they ar-e entitled to, but this will not be : obtained until the people rise and demand it. • That the opportunity of .purchasing this large property full of the most valuable minerals at ss. Od. per acre, as the evidence shows, should havo been relinquished by the Government lo a person who had not paid a farthing for it or given any security for payment, but with a land ring behind him awaiting the deal, is a matter that should be probed to tho bottom and the consideration that influenced the Government- to stoop to such a transaction ascertained if possible. It is sheer impudence of the Acting-Premier to say that a money advance'was made upon' Ihc property, purchase or no purchase. The option was either bought or riot bought—the money payment settles tho point. The mail who has suffered and knows the facts is kept in the background to keep the public, ill the dark, if -possible, until after the elections.—l am, etc., A VOTER ,AT THE COMING*- • ' I": 'ELECTIONS.
