THE COOK ISLANDS.
CHIEF JUSTICE'S INQUIRY. The report of tho Chief Justice on liifl recent mission of inquiry to Rnrotonga, may be pioscnied to parliament to-day. It is anticipated that his Honour will recommend the appointment of a Judge to relievo the Resident Commissioner of tho Cook Islands of all judicial responsibilities, but will not endorse the opinion that the present Commissioner should bo retired. The administration of the liquor laws came under Hie notice of the Chief Jiwtieo in llio criminal trial over which lie presided at Rarotonga, and it is expected that lie will strongly recommend that the laxity then disclosed should lio remedied. Ho will probably suggest means of iinprovinß the educational facilities provided for" the natives. No statement has been made as to whether t.hc evidence taken by tho Chief Justice during his secret inquiries will be «übmilted with the report, but, in any case, it is well understood Hint the demand for a Royal Commission will still bo pressed. Tho Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Carroll) stated yesterday, in reply to Mr. Glover, that the Chief Justice's report would bo laid on tho tab]© (his week.
