THE SUGAR STRIKE.
SETTLEMENT ARRIVED AT. GENERAL SATISFACTION. Bj-TelceraDh-Press Associalion-Coeyrtehl (Rec. August 15, 10.45.p.m.) Brisbane, August 15. The settlement arranged by the Sugar Strike Conference hns been accepted and work will bo resumed forthwith. Tho terms of tho agreement provide for a wage of 30s. a week and keep; an overtimo rato of time and a quarter; a fortyeight hours' week; and that no vindictive spirit shall be shown towards the strikers. General satisfaction is expressed at the settlement of tho strike. Tho conference met at noon, and shortly afterwards the press were admitted and handed the agreement.
The conference agreed that it should be a recommendation to employers and employees in tho various districts to .meet and endeavour to arrange a mutually satisfactory agreement for next season, in terms so far as possible tmiforni throughout the State. OTHER POINTS COVERED. Brisbane, August 15. After the Sugar Conference had sat un« til midnight, tho Minister of Works then announced to the press representatives that the negotiations had concluded, and a. form of agreement had been drafted and approved. It would be completed by noon to-day.
It is understood that the settlement is on the basis of a forty-eight hours' week, overtime to be paid only after nine hours had been worked. The settlement covers not only the sugar dispute, but. any possibility of a disputo in tho various callings represented by the delegates to the conference.
Field work is not touched in the agreement, tho delegates withdrawing their demands.
The delegates gave an undertaking that work would be immediately resumed.
LABOUR'S NEXT MOVE. (Rec. August 16, 0.15 a.m.)
Sydney, August 15. The Secretary of the Labour Council declares that now that the sugar strike is settled tho whole forces of organised labour will be directed against Messrs. ]lo?kins and Co., on behalf of the Lithgow strikers. THE LITHGOW DISPUTE. (Rec. August 15, 11.45 p.m.) Sydney, August 15. Mr. Tudor, Minister for Trade and Customs, declares that the request of tho Lithgow strikers for tho withdrawal of the iron bounty from Messrs. Hoskins, Ltd., cannot be grariteJ. He explains that the bounty is paid under the Act, aud not under regulations, and therefore it cannot be stopped at will.
