NEW THEATRES.

IN CLYDE QUAY. A syndicate is about to erect a smart little picturo theatre in tho grounds of tho City Hotel on tho Clyde Quay frontage. Tho location of the structure is judged to be a good one, as tho trend of population is towards tho cast and southeast ports of the city. Tho new theatre, which is to combine comfort with.a sense of luxury, will liavo a froutago to Clydo Quay ot 43ft. Gin., and a depth back to l'liiutner's Lane, of 100 ft. There will be a sft. right-of-way extending tho full depth of tho tkeatro on tho southern side, on which sido tho thealro is pierced with several evils. Jn addition to tkefo there aro tho wido main doors in front, and two exits into tho lano at Iho back, so that on this scoro no exception can bo taken to tho new house of entertainment. Seating accommodation will Iw provided for about 050 or 700 people, Tho reason for this comparatively small number is the space, which is being given t'o each seat and between the rows. Each occupant will bo given au 18-inch seat, and tho spaco between the rows will bo, 2fl. i)in. Thoso are. luxuriously generous' spaco dimensions. All the seats, with perhaps a few of tho cheaper seats right in the front' of the theatre, will be uphold tered iu keeping with the colour design of tho general decorative scheme. An innovation will be made in regard to tho gallery, which is to lie divided into uino boxes oxleuding across tho full breadth of tho theatre from wall t'o wall. It is felt,by tho promoters that pictures appeal to all classes, and that tho provision mndo for private parties by means of well-furnished boxes placed well back from the screen'will be acceptable to a ecctipn. of (he public. There will be a slight rako in the floor from about half-way to the front of the theatre to improve the lino of vision. Tho i'acado will be on attractively designed adaptation of tho Italian renaissance style, with a handsome dome in the centre. Tho main entrance will open on to a spacious foyer (to bo elaborately decorated). Iji tho centre will bo the ticket office, on either side swingdoors, admitting to the auditorium and on odo sido the stairway leading to tho box circle. Cloak roohis will bo provided, for the patrons of tho boxes. Tho structure will be of brick and reinforced con. crcte, and .will be practically' fireproof. Tho .architect; is Mr. William Foilding, of Huhe's Buildings, Wellington. The erection of Ihe theatre will mean an alteration to the City Hotel. Tho old billiard-room (tor some time in uso ns'a private bar), is to bo demolished entirely t'o allow spaco for tho erection of tho thealro nnd right-of-way, and « new bar lis to bo erected on that (tho northern) sido of the hotel, running a third of-tho way down (he exit court.

THE ADELPHI THEATRE. ' The end of the thoatre-buildinc boom is not yet. Tho Adolphi Picture Theatre Company, Limited, has been formed by Mr.' S. George Nathan, of Wellington, and Mr. Ci. W. Hume, ol Clnifitehurch. to erect a theatre .at the rear of Hume's Buildings in Willis Street. A long leasoof a vacant block of land (70ft. bv 100 ft.) has been secured from the owner, 'and tlio capital (between <EsflOO ' and ,£0000) has been subscribed to erect a commodious picture theatre, which is to scat 10(1(1 persons comfortably. The new theatre, which will run north and south, will be erected in reinforced concrete, .and will b« as near fireproof as any building can be. A main entrance from Willis Street will bo provided by sacrificing two of thoshops, and ample exits from tho building will Ixi provided on tho southern and western sides, from which tho public, will : reach Boulcott Street by moans ol I lib 14ft. right-of-way ■ under tho building '; known as the Boulcott Chambers. As tho building will not front a public thoroughfaro it will have a plain exterior,, but it is intended to raako the auditorium attractive and comfortable. To that, end the wholo of the seating accommodation will bo in the form of iron tip-up upholstered chairs. There will bo a gallery or dross circle, and provision is to bo • made in the matter postage acoojuinodu-ii tion in order that the theatre may bo used for purposes other than moving pictures. The new Star Theatre, which is in course of erection in Adolaido Road, is rapidly approaching completion. Tho structure, which is to bo tho now home of tho Star Pictures, is of tho very latest design in every respect, fireproof, commodious, and comfortable. Tho proprietors hope to open the new theatre, ' about August 28.,
