PAYMENT OF MEMBERS
SALARIES FOR BRITISH M.P.'S, I By TelcEraDh—Press Association—Conyrißht jj (Roe. August 12, 0.45 a.m.) London, August 11. Tho House of Commons has carried tho motion introduced by Mr. Lloyd-George, Chancellor of (ho Exchequer, in favour of paying members a salary of «£IOO per annum. position of iEisrr members. London, August 10. It is staled that the Government has refused to exempt Ireland from the Payment of Members Hill. Tho Irish parly has decided, in the circumstances, not to take any hostile action. THE LAND TAX. l London, August 10. The Houso of Commons is debating tho second reading of tho Finance Bill. Mr. Lloyd-George, Chancellor of tho Exchequer, stated that eight hundred thousand properties had been valued for land tax purposes, and only twenty-live appeals had been received. Discussing tho proposal to pay members a salary, tho London "Times said recently: "With regard to tho figure, .£IOO, . it is felt by Liberals and Labour members that it is tho golden mean between .£3OO and .£SOO, two figures which have_ been suggested at various times. The Nationalist members at a party moating early in tho session passed a self-denying ordinance, but none suppose that tho Government would exclude tho Irish members from the payment! and if the proposal is enacted the members of the party feel that they would have as much right to the salary as representatives of any other part of the Kingdom, and their leaders would have difficult}' in convinciii',' them to the contrary. Many Radicals, Nationalists, and Labour members would like to see the proposal coupled with one to provide them with free passes on the railways, and if this were done they would be content with a less salary. At_ present (he manner in which tho payment of members is to be carried out is in some doubt, and it is believed that the Government have not come to a final decision. In Ministerial circles there is littlo desire to embody the proposal in a specific . Bill, if it can bo put into the Esti- . mates and included in tho Appropriation ; Bill."
