THE TURF.

THE GRAND NATIONALS HURDLES WON BY CONTINUANCE. UNDECIDED WINS. IBy Telecraph.-Press Association.! Christchurch, August 10. Although cold, the weather was Vne for the second day of tho Canterbury Jockey Club's Grand National meeting, and as a result of a fresh breeze tho going was faster than on the fir.-t day. There was again a very large cticadanee, and speculation was particularly brisk, all previous records being exceeded. The total for the day amounted to JSO.IiSO, as against .£19,721 on tho second day of last year, when bookmakers were licensed. Eaciug generally was interesting, but in the chief event of tho day, the Grand National Hurdles, it was early apparent that barring accidents Continuance, who was.sent out a hot favourite, would be hard to beat. Ho kept his place in front, and at tho finish won without any difficulty. When Windage fell in this race, Cochrane, besides fracturiiig his collarbone, sustained concussion Aliesults: HUNT CLUB CJP, of 130 sovs. About three miles. 3 Mr. H. D. Buchanan's ch. g. Alexis was half a length further away. Time, liniii. 17 .'i-fisee. The winner was bought in for MS. NOTES ON THE RACING. IBy Telceraph.—Special Correspondent.) Chris.tchurch, August 10. • The big race proved the best of "good, things" for the favourite-, Continuance, on whom Young adopted the old experiment of going to the front. Windage appeared to be goinj? well when he fell, but nothing else had a chance with the winner. Flynn, rider of Centaur, broke his collar-bone, and Cochrane, on Windage, sustained slight concussion. The Ilunt Club Cup, as usual, brought with it. a train of disaster, and of the eight starters, only the three placed horses completed the course. Oakley was niado favourite, but he ran off early in the. race. He was put at it again, but, later on, refused. » Glemuore save a splendid exhibition of jumping, but at the cud of the first mile his jockey broko a leather, and had to ease the horse. Hβ lost fully thirty lengths, but at the next mile ho had jumped into the lead again. In the end ho was only beaten by a narrow margin after a lot of hustling in the straight. Gold Circle being in a different class to-day started at a very short price in the Sunnier Handicap, in which he ,was opposed by a weak field. Ho only scored by the narrowest of margins from , Eaglestmif, who came very fast over the final l'lirlpng. Turna led till well imto the straight, when ho was joined by the favourite. Just when Gold Circle had settled the little black horse, he had to answer another challenge from Eaglestonc. Amaru.ran very wide out the whole way, an;l was the last to finish. After a series of failures on the Kiccarton course, Boanerges broko the ico today, when ho scored in the August Handicap. He was made a warm favourite, and, over the first few furlongs, ho was pulling double, Expansion made all the running, and gave the favourite a lot of . bother over the final furlong. Flitaway, after being prominent early, faded out of the contest, but put in a grand run at the finish, and just cut Firobell out of third money.

When the horses enmo out for the Grand National Hurdles, a largo crowd anxiously inspected the different candidates. Continuant.,; pleased greatly, and so did Compass and The Rover. After three false starts, the candidates were sent away to an even start. As they rose at the first fence tho colours of Centaur and The Native were tho most prominent. At the next fence Continuance and Master Paul rose together, with the field bunched. Centaur took oft' too far away, and came down. .Tho next fence brought down I'aritutu. Passing Cutts, tho order was: Paul, Continuance, St. Aidan, Appin, Windage,' and The Native. As they swept past tho mile post, Windage ran up to Continuance, and Master Paul faltered. At Hie five furlongs, Windage came down, and Tho Rover and Tho Nativo ran into the places behind Continaanc«. The field was now badly strung out, and it looked only a question of standing up for tho favourite to win. The Rover put in a claim before the last fonco was reached, but Continuance went through a gap, and so gained an advautage. The remainder of the journey was practically uncontested, for nothing could reach the leaders, and they finis'hcd in tho order named. St. Aidan, Paisano, luldonan, Compass, and Whakaweira were tho next division. Master Paul was last. Espartero fell at the last fence. Tho -winner hails from Gisborne, and is trained by G. Jones, who has now won two Nationals in succession..

Antarctic and Hoaaiga were- the primo fancies in tho Beaufort Steeples, which was, like tho National Steeples, notable for fine jumping throughout the race. When tho field settled down, Lqyoll,.,led Hoangii and Sir Lethe, with Antarctic well back. At the back of the ccurso Lovcll was done with, and Sir Lethe- nnd Honuga raced away- from the field. This pair were level at tho last fence, where Hoiiuga fell, and Sir Lethe appeared to have tho race won. Captain Jingle finished very fast, and scored on tho post. Antarctic was third. Laghmor nnd Tho Gunner wero in advance of the remainder, who wero strung out. I'assiro and Gaelic wero fancied in that order in the Hack Hurdles, and the latter had a comfortable win. Rangiwhemia aad Hawick were in tho van over the first mile, with Gold Pin just clear of Passive. At the bottom bend Hawick and Gold Pin wero collared by Gaelic, a.nd the Wairarapa horse, jumping the last fence well, ran in ah easy winner. Hawick; was only a head in front of Gold Pin. The betting on the open niilo was very even between tho two top-weights. It was generally believed that Undecided was a better horse than on the first day, while it was held that Nyland was going off. The pair monopolised tho betting, and also the judge's attention. Undecided was off first, but was soon headed by Iney, who lod with Ariom to the turn. Undecided then came on, as did Nyland, and the pair left tho field. In a vigorous finish Undecided woa by half a length.. ■ . . Prior to tho start' of the Woolston Plate, Toanga reared, nnd fell on tho iron-fence, slightly injuring himself. Cashier, Toanga, Medallist, and Alexis were all well backed. The two last-named raced in the van to-the (urn, when Medallist came on, and won comfortably. Busyland just htaded Alexis for second money. . .
