PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY.

A largely attended meeting of • tho Philosophical Society was held last evening, when a number of papers were read. "Tho National Home Reading Union" was interestingly dealt with by Mr. Thos. King, and Dr. J. M. Mason l.eated tho subject "Immunity, or how the Body Defends Itself Against its Microbic Foes." On behalf of Miss Cooke, M.A.,. Professor road some interesting notes on Salicornia Australis, and the secretary, on behalf of Miss E. M. Jacobson, M A., gave an interesting paper based on an incident of 1840, "The History of the Flag at Akaroa." Several other papers were postponed owing to tho lateness of the hour. A short discussion followed'each paper, and those who prepared the addresses were accorded votes of thanks.
