THE JERSEY COW FOR BUTTER.

After testing all the leading breeds of dairy cows, the Royla Danish Agricultural Society has, says."The Dairy," an English paper, recommended the farmers of the country to use the Jersey. Tho Jersey .is doing, a great work hi America. Sinco the present year commenced, no fewer than 7SO cows, tested by_' the officers af the U.S. Experiment Stations, have been' accepted by tho American Jersey Cattle Club,' their average yield of milk having been 731 gallons, containing oA percent, of fat. At this rate the butterfat produced averaged 4211b.,-equal to 460 lb.' of- commercial butter. .'.;■

The capacity of the Jersey..as a butterproducer may he shown by. the fact that SO cows pave, over 70011). of butter in a year, while 81 gave over 1000 gallons of milk, three cows exceeding vloKl eallons. Four of the cows yielded rtvcV half a ton of butter in tho year the highest yield of all being 112Glb.—a figure authenticated by tho Jersey Cattle Club. ""*'.

The best..average was made by cows above tho age of five years, of which thore were 210. These cows, which may be regarded as in their prime, reached an average of 028 gallons of milk and 195 lb. of fat, equal to nearly 5501b. of butter, the highest.yield of milk, being 1725 gallons. -The'averages of younger cows token in half-yearly stages decreased with their agos. The younger cows,—those under two years—averaged 605 gallons-, .containing 321 lb. of fat, but only 19 of tho whole number tested gavo less than 500 gallons. Wherever Jerseys have been tested for any length of timo against cows of other breeds, "Tho Dajry" asserts, they have produced tho largest yip'ld of butter, and their power- of production appears to bo gradually increasing.- "' ".'
