MASTERTON NOTES.

(From Oar Correspondent.) Masterten, August 8. ■ A number of Mnsterton orchnrdists are this year endeavouring to cope with tho woolly aphis and other blights by inserting sneep dip in tho barrels of the fruit trees. Tho poison in tho dip is said to rise with the sap, and destroy most of tho pests. Mr. W. I'ryor, secretary of the New Zealand Employers' Federation, is to deliver iiu address here on Friday night before the local branch of tli-e Employers' Association. Tenders are being called by Messrs. Crichton and M'Kny, architects, of Wellington," for tho erection of new premises at I'ahintua for the Bank ol New South Wnles. A good deal of scrub-cutting is being undertaken in the East Coast districts just now. Ono owner is calling tenders for cutting about a thousand acres of manuka. Tho annual "social" and dance in connection with tho Red Star Football Club is 'to be held oh Thursday evening. Mr. W. Platt, of Opaki, is doing excellent work in this district with tho divining rod. Ho has already located water on several properties where it was previously not known to exist.

A deputation-has been appointed by tho Masterton Competitions Society to wait on tho Trust Lands Trustees at their next meeting, to aslc for a grant, in aid of tho society, which is held to bo of a highly educational character. Steps are being taken (o incorporate the society nnder the Unclassified Friendly Societies Act.

Tho ordinary meeting* of the Mnsterton Oddfellows' Lodge was held last, night, tho Eev. A. M'Lcod, N.G., occupying the chair. A new member was initiated into the order, and Bro. F. MacDo'nald was installed as V.G. It was announced that the next meeting .of the Past Grand Lodge would be held in Mastcrton on the second Thursday in October. Mr. F. Jlunn is to bo presented bv tho Mnsterton Competitions Society with a memonto pf tho services which ho rendered as supcrvisor-tttrtho roeent festival.
