ACCOMMODATION SEVERELY TAXED. IBs Telegraph.—SDCcial Correspondent.! Auckland, August 5. There was only one vacant bed in the Auckland Hospital last night'. Throughout the winter the accommodation at the institution has been severely taxed and the admissions during the past three days have been so numerous that Ihe patients in the hospital last night totalled 300. Though there has boon no particular epidemic, and infectious diseases have not been very prevalent, there has been 111010 ill sin an average liiitnbrr of eases ol sickness during the winter, and the accident. ward has ":ren well filled lor some time. On Wednesday 2"i patients- 1 ,. nil exceptionally large number for one day, were brought to the hospital. Liglueeu wero admitted en Thursday, whi!o there were tiiieen new arrivals yesterday. At one lime vesierday the ollieials thought it would be nrcesv.-ry to provide temporarv accommodation in the lorm of "shakedowns," but happily scyt-nil patients were well enough lo discharged and this- provided suilable accommodation for the new patients Mr. I'. M. Alackav, chairman of the Hospital Board, seen' by a reporter, raid there was not tho slighted, need for alarm. As the Jnspector-Geneml of Hospitals stated in his last annual report ihe Auckland Hospital provides :)I0 beds and in eases of dire necessity the bods in the observation cottages could als».) bo requisitioned. Therefore it was evident that between '10 and 50 more ljeds could bo utilised if tho necessity p/osa.
