DEATH OF A MAORI WAR VETERAN.
A V.C. HOLDER DIES IN THE WORK. HOUSE. By Telegraph—Press AssociaUon-Oopyrlijhl London, August 4. Mr. Dudley Stagpoolo, who woii the Victoria Cross iu New Zealand in 1803, has died in tlio workhouse at 'Ware, in Hertfordshire. Drummer Dudley Stagpoolo was mentioned more than one-o in dispatches. Ho won the Victoria 1 Cross at Omatn. Later, in 1801, he with his brothers was mentioned in dispatches by Colonel Warre as follows:—"The gallant conduct of the brothers, Privates Bartholomew and Martin, and Drummer Dudley Stagpoolo, 57th Regiment, all of whom have been wounded in tlio war —Private Martin Staspoole unfortunately .seriously on this occasion—also deserves special mention, us wherever danger is they are suro to bo found." Tliisdispatch related to an engagement at Kaitako on March 11, 1801. Martin Stagpoolo was at that timo 29 years of age, and had been eleven years in tho service.
