ANGLO=GERMAN RELATIONS.

« SPEECH BY LORD HALDANE. PEACEFUL CO-OPERATION OF TWO POWERS URGED. UNNECESSARY SUSPICIONS. Uy Telegraph—Press Association-Oopyrieht (Rec. August '1, 9.53 p.m.) London, August 4. Lord Haldane, Secretary of Stalo for "War, in an address at a students' meeting at Oxford, said it would be a pity if tho peaceful co-operation of Germany and England wero marred or impeded by unnecessary suspicions arising through ignorance or a want of forbearance. There were few things more desirable than an understanding between England and Germany. Sucli a chango might not supersede considerations of defence, but its tendency would bo to lighten the financial burdens of both nations. CESSION OF TAHITI. A JOINT PROTEST URGED. Sydney, August 4■ The "Sydney Morning Herald" says the suggested cession of Tahiti to Germany ought to call forth an immediate protest from Australia and New Zealand. "It is unfortunate," says tho "Herald" "that Mr. Fisher and Sir Joseph Ward are absent, for joint representations should bo immediately made in such terms as to leave no possibility of mistake as to the feeling of Australia in tho matter. Any intrusion of Germany in the Pacific would bo bitterly resented, because it would mean an ever-threatening menace at our door." Tho paper adds:—"The possession of a Pacific island is nothing io boast of. Thoso wanting it can only desire it as a point of departure for a much more farreaching .attempt at aggression." "COMPLETE COMPENSATION." SLICE OF MOROCCO WANTED. Berlin, August 3. Tho German Colonial Society has issued a manifesto protesting against any settlement with France on tho Morocco question failing to givo Germany compensation in the shape of tho Sus Province in Southern Morocco.
