The nmnial merlin.? of the Wellington Dramatic Society was held on Thursday evening.' There was a large attendance, and several new members were proposed. The following officers were elected President, Dr. Izard; vice-presidents, Dr. Newman, Sir John Fiudlay, Mrs. T. G. Macarthy, and Messrs. T. M. Wilford, W. Barber, J. Fuller, and K. Fletcher! stage manager, Mr. N. Aitkcn; hen. secretary and treasurer, Mr.. Herbert F. Wood. It is the society's intention to produce a play at an early date. On the motion of Mr. J. A\ T . Macdonald, the' Supremo Court yesterday»granted_ to the Public Trustee probate of the wills of the undermentioned deceased, persons: —John Eeid, Into of Sydenham, labourer; Charles Hood, Into of Dillmanstown, miner; Gerald O'Keilly, late of Wnverlev, farmer; "William Harris, late of/ farmer; Alexander Robertson, late of Ihmedin, blacksmith. Orders to administer wero also granted to the Public Trustee in respect of the estates of the following;— William Edward Noal, lale of Taumarunni, sawmill hand; Eliza Johnson, late of Brooklyn, widow; David Anderson, late of Mossburn, farmer; Robert Brennan, late of Matainnl.a, farmer; Christina Crockard Revell, lato of Kaiapoi, domestic. A meeting in connection with Hie New Camera Club was hold on Thursday evening, over twenty intending members beins present, notwithstanding tho wretched weather. All present were enthusiastic in the proposal, and Messrs. AVhite, Denton, Beck, Hocking, Weightman, and Williams were appointed as a provisional committee to draft rules and select a suitablo room as a club room. Tho committeo lias to report to a general meeting, to ho held 011 August 17, when the club will bo inaugurated with a membership of 50 or moro for a start. The youth Cornish, who has just served a period of detention at the Terrace Gaol for refusing lo comply with (lie compulsory provisions of Iho Defence Act with respect lo registration, was "the guest of honour," so to speak, at a largel.vnttendfd meeting at tho Socialist Hail, Manners Street, last evening, and made the recipient of certain tokens of the anticonscriptionists' admiral ion for his martyrdom—to wit, two medals, one presented by (he Christchurch branch of tho New Zealand Anti-Conscription League and the other by the Rtiranga. Miners' Union. The proceedings, of course, wcro made the occasion, of various inflammatory speeches in 'denunciation of tho "jingoistic microbe," listened to with rapt attention by the assembly.
The report upon Iho drainage operations in the Hauraki Plains during (ho past year was presented to Parliament .yesterday afternoon. It shows that the area of the lands reclaimed and disposed of during; the year was 21,530 acres of a capital value of .£101.870. The. laad now lieniß drained preparatory to being opened for settlement during the coming summer amounts to GSOO acres, valued at .1127,200. Sixty-nine news Wfro set apart for reserves.
