PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.

(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, August i. The Palmerston Debating Society held its weekly meeting last night at All Saints Sunday Schoolroom, when tho suggestion that "Wellington contributed more to Napoleon's downfall than Nelson" was discussed, and after an interesting debate a vote of members decided in favour of Nelson. The nest meeting will be devoted to impromptu speeches. Dressing-rooms, lavatory, and offices have just been added to the new hall 011 the show grounds, and it is now a very complete structure for lentertainiments such as dancing, skating, etc. The annual meeting of the Manawatu Employers' Association was held last night, 'when there was a large attendance, and the president (Mr. J. Aitchison) occupied the chair. Tho report and bal-ance-sheet showed that the association was making substantial progress, both in the number of members and financially. The following officers were elected:— President, Mr. E. L. Broad; vice-presi-dents, Messrs. T. Childs and W. A. Browning; treasurer, Mr. M. J. Kennedy; secretary, Mr. W. M'Kenzic; auditor, Mr. E. L. Young; executive, Messrs. E. S. Abraham, J. Aitchison, C. li. Beattie, W. E. Bsndall, J. Bell, J. Bett, A. E. Bennett, C. N. Clausen, H. Croucher, A. E. Clausen, E. Davis, A. Dowick, D. E. Dustin, T. Griggs, E. Hampton, S. T. Hunt, E. D. floben, C. F. Johnston, T. Johansen, G. W. Keeling, .T.T.Jverslake, S. E. Lancaster, A. Mollor, R. B- M William, J. W, M'Carty, E.J. Nash, H. Palmer, E. S. Pees, Seifert, H. Scott, H. Sinclair, E, Sollitt, J. E. Skcats, J. Tennant, C. Withers/C. A. Worrall, and N. L. Young. Mr. W. Pryor, secretary of the federation, gave an interesting address 011 labour legislation. He stated that the federation now numbered over 20,000 members. Mr. Pryor was) accorded a hearty vote of thanks for his address. A. largo number of new members vero elected at the meeting. At the monthly meeting of the College School Committee last night, tho, headmaster reported that the roll now numbered 51S, with an average attendance ot 460 It was 'resolved to approach tho Education Board with the object of exchanging the present pupil teachcrs lor one assistant teacher. The question of compulsory attondanco at technical and continuance classes was discussed, tuo chairman, Mr. T. K. Hodder, expressing tho opinion that if this was made compulsory it would tend to keep boys off tho streets at night. It was resolved to leave the matter to the annual conference of School Committees, which meets shortlv Messrs. T. R. Hodder, J. B. Gerrand. J." J. Whitehead, and the Eev. Mr. Doull were appointed delegates to the conferM Mr«. s. C. Mellsop, hon. secretary of the New Zealand Ladies' Golf. Union, has presented a handsome gold cup as a chattrophy for stroke play at the chain* pionship meetings. Tho cup is mounted on a plinth of polished' maire,- bearing twelve shields for the names of winners. The annual instillation and investiture of officers of Lodge Otangaki (Ashhurst took place last night, when Bro. Robert M'Kenzie was installed as worshipful master. The impressive Masonic ceremony w.is carried out by E.W. Bro. J. MOll- - P.G.M.. assisted by Wor. Bro. J. A Nash. P.G.D.C. A banquet, was held •after tho installation, the usual loyal and Masonic toasts being honoured. There was a large number of visitinß brethren, including many from Palmerston. A concert party, organised by Mr. C. J. Monro, visited the hospital last nisrht, and gave a number of musical items, whicli were greyly appreciated by tho, patients and staff. At the Court-house to-div an innnest was held bv Mr. J. A. Nash (actingcoroner) and a jury of six, resrardinp the circumstances surrounding the death of the infant daughter of Mr. and Mm. .T. C. AVilliam«on. of Ashhurst. Evidence was ?iven bv Dr. Bett that, the infant, which was three davs old, was healthy, but the greater nortion of its Innes had not at any time been used for breathing, and this, in his opinion, was the causa of death. After henrini? further evidence, a verdict, of death from natural causes was returned.
