DOGS AND MULES FOR THE POLE

DIET AND DISCIPLINE. IBy Telezraph —Press Association.) Christchurch, August 3. In view of the departure of the British Antarctic Expedition's ship Terra Nova for Captain Scott's base towards the end of the year, matters connected with the additiu.mil animals to be conveyed to Antarctica are receiving attention at present. Mr. J. J. Kinsey has arranged for a further supply of Siberian dogs, and has obtained them through a Vladivostok firm. The dogs will be shipped to Kobe, Japan, where they will be transhipped to one of the steamers of the E. and A. line to Sydney, and thence will be again transhipped to Lyttelton, where it is expected that they will arrivo somewhere about the end of October. In their native country the. dogs are fed exclusively on woyccala" (dried fish), and have not been accustomed to any other kind of food. As it will be impossible to teed them on dried fish in the Antarctic regions, Mr. Kinsey is making arrangements for an alteration in their diet upon their arrival in Japan, and, if Spratt'p dog biscuits are obtainable there, they will bo fed on them, anil wiil thus become accustomed to the diet that will be provided for them when with the expedition. Regarding the mules from India to be sent to Antarctica, Mr. Kinsey has been informed that the animals have been selected, and are ready for shipment about tint present time from Calcutta by tho Union Company's steamer Aparima. Tho mules, which aro similar to those used for transport purposes in Tibet, have been trained, and it is hoped that, as Iho result of this training, they will pull unitedly when worked. As the Indian mule is of a different temperament from the Siberian pony, which is very erratic, it is expected that better work will bo got out of them. As is being done with the Siberian dogs, the Indian mules are being accustomed to the food that will be availablo for them in the Antarctic regions.
