"THE POPE AND THE KING."
Sir,—ln your issue of the 31st nit.' over the nom do plume of "Loyalist," referonce was made to the farewell banquet tendered to the Irish Home Rule envoys, strong exception being taken to tho toast proposed in honour of the "Pope and the King," which "Loyalist" assorts would not bs permitted in any other country where King George is acknowledged. But does he ■ not forget that we are in advance of all other nations of tho world, especially in the spirit of .democracy and liberalism? Is not the Pope an absolute monarch of a spiritual realm, while the King is only a limited monarch of a temporal sphere? Therefore, was it not right, from tho point of view of those assembled on such a mission of mercy, that the Pope should occupy the highest post of honour? My wonder is that tho King was thought of at all at such a gathering. Nothing but a keen sense of I6yalty could have suggested it. Are there not many Kings, but only one Pope? Docs not the reign over all the world, while King ■ r,rgc V only reigns over tho British Empire?—l am, etc., ■DEMOCIUT.
