CHRISTCHURCH BY-ELECTION.

o STATEMENT BY MR. CARROLL. The Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Carroll) informed a pressman last evening that none of tho prospective candidates for the Christchurch North seat would be announced aM the nominee of tho Government. "Aye are going to leave the matter alone," was his terse explanation of tho party's attitude. ■ Mr. Speaker issued his warrant at § p.m., yesterday, commanding Mr. Pollen, the Clerk of the Writs, to issue the writ for tho Christchurch North election forthwith. The writ should, therefore, in the ordinary' course of events, be issued to-day. In this case. August 18 should bo about the date of the election. Tho returning officer has been very busy to-day receiving applications for enrolment: for Christchurch North. The old roll has on it 7925 names,, and it is anticipated that the supplementary roll already contains about 2300. MR. HALL'S VIEWS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) Christchurch, August 2. A meeting of the supporters of Mr. J. D. Hall, the Reform candidate for Christchurch North, was held to-night, and was briefly addressed by the candidate, who stated that ho was in favour of financial reform, closer settlement of land of tho Dominion, settlers being put on under tho leasehold system with the option of tho freehold. He also favoured a Civil Service Board to control appointments to the Civil Service, settlement of Native lands, compulsory military training, and a commission to inquire into industrial matters. A motion was passed expressing the meeting's confidence in Mr. Hall, and pledging themselves to do their utmost to secure his return.. Executive and other committees were set up.
