(From Our Special Correspondent.) Palmerston, August 2. Tho usual meeting of the Borough Council was held last night, Hie Mayor (Mr. .1. A. Nash) presiding. Abraham again vrntn in connection with the longstanding trouble over his wafer rights, and the. letter was referred to the Public Works Committee. A considerable amount of di-cus-ion took place on a motion by Councillor llaydou that all work in the borough should be curried out under (lie contract system. The motion, however, ivas lost, and it was decided that, maintenance work should be done by day labour. A report was read from I lie If mi. Mr. J'ill. on tho Opera House. The report dealt with -what was required to bring the building np-to-da!e, anil suggested . Ih.it the dress circle should be pulled down and a. smaller one substituted, and a family circle also erected. Other improvements were also suggested, Ilia total cost being estimated at. .1:2(101). Tho report was held over for future consideration. The proposal of fho Foxton Harbour Board to purchase the Foxton Wharves from the Government at a cast of .£20,000 was discussed at length, and .it was formally decided to support this part of the proposal, but to strongly oppose the board's suggested- rating of the borough, the amount set down as the borough's quota being considered altogether too high. Amongst the correspondence was a letter from Mr. T. W. Kirk, Government Biologist, in regard to (he fungus growth known as "fairy ring."." ■which is doing so much damage to tho grass in the Square enclosure:*, and was referred lo the borough curator. The council decided to call for tenders immediately for flit! necessary alterations (o the old fire brigade station, to make it suitable for the l-'ive Social Club. Preparations for the military training camp, which commences on the Palmerston Showgrounds next .Saturday, are being carried out by a number of members of tho Permanent Artillery, who arrived from Wellington yesterday. Messrs. Htzhorbert, Wyidc, and Lewis have been appointed vestrymen of All Saints' Church. Mr. f?. Jickell, borough engineer, who hasi been granted a week's leave of absence, left to-day for Nelson, where he will inspect and report on the waterworks of that town.
