OTAGO A. & P. SOCIETY

SPEECHES AND AWARDS. (By Telegraph-Press Association.) Duneriin, August 1. Tho Otago A. and P. Society's annual winter show opened to-day under most favourable circumstances. Tho weather left nothing to be desired, and a large number of visitors came in from the country. The show was held later than usual, the delay being due to the fire which occurred in the' Agricultural Hall buildings in December but, notwithstanding this, the entries totalled 1131, as against 109S in 1910. Tho new buildings are larger, and enable exhibits to be displayed to better advantage, and they also incrcase-the coinfort of patrons. Ah excellent display has been made, the quality comparing favourably with that of former years. The show was officially opened In' Lord Islington, who stated that lie had peculiar satisfaction in attending such functions, there being, as it were, the living link between this distant and-loyal Dominion and other parts of the British Empire. He was strongly of opinion that the. farmers of New Zealand should go on with work on the lines indicated by scientific research. They must''extend, expand, and organise. Every vear they would be more and more confronted with competition in our staple products, as the countries which sold those products were competing in the same markets as New Zealand. He concluded by expressing pleasure at having been present to open the show, and wished the society continued success and expansion in the years to come. In the course, of his remarks the Tlon. T. Mackenzie said that, this was 7m age of raieh cries, and it was therefore probably all the more necessary that tho.-e who were entrusted with •great respon.-i----bilities should dive beneath the surface, and carefully weigh the prospects and possibilities of the situation. "If, will be remembered,", he continued, ''thai [ fell that the position of the country justified me in throwing light upon sonic fallacious deductions arrived at by a gentleman occupying what i* probably the foremost commercial and financial position in New Zealand. At tho time of the deliverance of the speech'-referred L our pessimists at once seized upon it as an indication that we were in for a period of depression. The reply which t gave has never been challenged—still less has any attempt been made to reply. [ arn pleased to note that the most recent papers received from the Homeland show a continuance of prosperity, and [ have already ,said that, in conjunction with gold, this factor is the basis of our well-being here."
