SHOCKING AFFAIR AT NEWTOWN.

4, Shortly before.,s o'clock yesterday morning, Thomas David Bryant, an expressman, residing at 47 Edinburgh Terrace, had his attention attracted by the sound of moaning outside his window. On going out he discovered a man lying beside the fence with his throat' cut.' Bryant at once went to communicate with the police and, on returning about 20 minutes later, discovered that the man* was dead. Sergeant Mathicson and Constable Goss arrived shortly after, and the body was removed to the morgue. Subsequently il was, discovered that the deceased was John Lawrence, 55 years of age who, until about throe months ago, had been employed at the Post and Telegraph stores. It appears that, at about 4.15 a.m., deceased was seen and spoken to by Alexander Russell, a dairyman. According to the latter, the man did not appear to be quite right in his senses. He asked Russell t-j direct him to Boulcott StTeet and, after receiving a reply, walked off in the conect direction. A search made by Constable Willets in ihe vicinity of where the body was found, resulted in the discovery of a donble-bladcd pocket-knife; An inquest' will bo held to-day.
