CRICKET.
WOOD'S UNIQUE FEAT. Particulars of C. J. B. Wood's feat of going in first, making a century in each innings, and of carrying out his bat for Leicestershire v. Yorkshire, are to hand, He batted with wonderful patience, was altogether at the wickets for eight hours and forty minutes, and was, thereiore, in the held during the whole of the 17 hours the match was in progress. This tremendous strain of being in the field for the whole of the match, was it is recalled by "Tho Standard," undergone by W. G. Grace when in his forty-seventh year. The contest—between. Kent and Gloucestershire—took place at Gravesend, and Mr. Grace not only scored 257 in ihe first innings, when he was last' man out, but, when Gloucestershire went in with 104 to win, scortd 73 not out. GIFFEN'S 1000 th WICKET. Tho Adelaide correspondent of "The Referee" writes:—George Giffen, who still frequently has a game of cricket in the season, received an interesting memento the other day from Mr. W. J. Gurtn. It consisted of the one bail which flew off Syd. Gregory's wicket in Sydney when "Giff" captured, his 1000 th wicket. "Tich" collared it at the time and sent out another bail, so that the match might go on, but. he afterwards gave it to Mr. Gunn, who n6w reckons that the appropriate man to have it is George Giffen. South Australians aro very anxious, and, no doubt, all Australians are res garding the health Of W. J. Whiffy.' He has had to be operated upon three' times in connection with the attack of appendicitis, and it is understood Hint he is now in Sydney. The coming season is approaching rapidly, and the condition of tho crack left-arm bowler's health is naturally causing anxiety.
