THE RAILWAYS.
KO SEDUCTION OF FAKES. The Minister for Railways has no in> tention at present of reducing the railway fares. He stated yesterday afternoon that tho increase which was made some time ago docs not nfl'ect passengers travelling up to 150 miles, 'llic addition to the fares for loiißer distances was necersary, because ■ excessive reductions had been made in the past. The present rovenuo did not justify any further concessions in tho fares, but the accommodation for second : class passengers would be improved, with a view to providing tho comfort to which passengers making long journeys worn entitled. Tho longitudinal seats with which most of the second-class carriaßcs ar,e at present fitted will- 1)0 replaced by cross Beats, each for two persons,, in all carriaßes used on express trains running lons distances. Thesocbairs, while similar in dosien to those in the cainagos on the Main Trunk line, will be of a less expensive pattern. All the new secondclass carriages which are being built for tho suburban train services ■ arc being fitted with the more comfortable cross seals.
