This week's Gazette announces the special areas in Ilio Dominion which, fnr the. purposes of (ho Defence Act of 11110, have been exempted from tlie compulsory training provisions. Area No. I.' Tho territory in tho Auckland land district bounded on the north and northoast by the s.ca from Capo 51 aria Van Diemcu to tho mouth of tho Awauiti liivor; Ihcnco towards the south-east to U\o noi'th-wcstern corner of Block I, Ahipara Survey District; and Ihcnco towards fho south-west by tho tea to tho place of commencement'. Also, the area in tho snmo district bounded on the cast by the sea from Cape Karikari lo the northem boundary of Block IX, Knngaunu Survey District; thenco towards tho south by Blocks IX and VII], liangaunu Survey District, lo the norlh-weslohi corner of tho lost-mentioned block; and thenco ■towards tho west and north-west by the sea to the place of commencement.
Area No. 2. The territory in Iho Auckland and Hawkc's 13ay land districts bounded towards the north-west by the sea from the mouth of tho Kaituna Stream to Capo Kunaway; 'thence towards the north and cast: generally by the sea to the mouth of tho Waioinoku Stream; thenco towards tho south-west by that stream to its source; thence to the summit of Ahititi Mountain, the summit of Wholurau Mountain, tho confluence of the Motif Kiver and tho Jlangaolane Stream, and on to tho mouth of tho Kaituna Stream, the place of commencement.
Area No. 3, The territory .in the Auckland, Hawko'e Bay, and Wellington land districts bounded towards the. north by a right lino from the summit: nf WhnrppunniiKa Mountain to the summit of Uraura Mountain, summit of Tikorangi Mountain, tho junction of roads near tho source of tho Waiolaiiu Stream, Galatea, the confluence of the "Whakatane River and the Walkare Stream, .the conlliienco of the Waioj'ka liivo.r and the Opalo Stream, towards 'the north-east to the summit of Maungatapero Mountain, towards the south-east, to tho northernmost; point of Lake Waikaremoana.lhonco via tho boundary between the Auckland and Hawke's Hay land districts to the To Hoe Hiver, by that river to its conllupiico with thp llohnka River, and on to its source, thence to the summit of Te Iringa Mountain; then towards the south by a due west to the watershed between the Ransilikei Hiver and the Aorangi Streiim, tho summit of Paratctaitonga Mountain, the watershed west of Lake Tmino, over Tongariro and Pareora, to tho summit of Rnngitolo Mountain, and towards the north-west to tho summit of Wharopuhanga Mountain, tho placo of commencement.

The territory in tho Kelsrn, Xnr\horough, Canterbury,- and Westland land districts bounded, towards the north by a, right line running duo east from the summit of the Urunner Range to Mount Mantel], Mount Daring, the northernmost point f.I , Lake Rotoiti, Beeby s Knob, Fortv-eight Kncb, north-east to Gordon's Knob, to the confluence of tho Clarence and Branch li<vcr<=, on to the south-east by . tho Clm-enco liiver to the bend nl tho junction of roads near Jollie's I'ass, the conIluonce of tho Diver llanmer and Boundary Creek, south by tho Hiver Ilanmer to its confluence with the Waiau-na. Hivor, via that river to its confluence witli tho River Hope, tho Hope River to its source, the confluence of the Irsnt and Tuliiikuri llivers, tho Tutaikuri River to its confluence with tho \\aihcki liivcr, to tho north-western comer of Lako Haupiri, to Lake Hill, the couflii<<T.co of the Grey and Alexander Kivers, thence by tho leading spur and the watershed over Mount 11 aa'st.and.Mount Burnett to the Victoria Itange. the summit of tho Victoria and Bninner Ranges, and on to a point due west of Mount Mantcll, tho place of commencement.

The territory in the Wesiland, Cantorbury, Otago, and Southland land districts .bounded on tho north-east by the Waitaha River from the sea to its source,'duo east to the summit, of the Southern Alps, south-east la the confluence of tho Godley and Macauby Kivers, tho nortlicrmncst point of Lako Ohau, the summit of Terrace Peak, tho mouth of Humbling Bum on tho western side, of Lake Wanaka, tho southernmost: point of Lochnagar, tho confluence cf the Dart River and tho Houtcburn, via the Kouleburn to its source, and duo west to the watershed east of the llcllyford River, cast by that wutershed and the watershed over DaniL Peaks and Mcfl'ot Peak to the sourco of Wintou Burn, Winton Burn to its confluenco with the Mararoa Kiver, east to the summit of the Thompson Mountains, the watershed cast of the Mararoa Diver, and the Miminit of the Takitimo Mountains to Cornet Peaks, to the confluence of Ligar Creek with the Waiau Kivor, and ou to the watershed east of Lako Mouowai, by the watershed cast: of Lakes Monowai and Hauroto to tho Hump, to the source of Track Burn, down to its mouth at Tcwuewao Bay, mid thence towards Eoutli. west, and north-west by llμ sea to the Waitaha Eivcr, the place of commencement. ,
