A NEW IRISH BISHOP.
ELECTION OF THE DEAN OF ST. PATRICK'S. A meeting of the Bishops of the Church of Ireland was held in June for the purpose of electing a bishop to the vacant See. of Ossory, Torus, and Loighlin.. Two names—those of the Very liev. 'J. IT. Bernard, D.D., Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin, and,tho Vcn. J. K. Latham, D.D., Archbishop of Ferns—were sent up from the- Diocesan Synod. The Dean of St. Patrick's was elected. The new bishop had a brilliant career at Trinity College, Dublin, and as Dean of St, Patrick's has worthily occupied a. notable position in the Church of Ireland. At the Diocesan Synod Dr. Latham obtained 73 clerical votes to 49 given for Dr. Bernard, and Ml lay votes to G3 given to the latter. Dr. Latham secured a two-thirds majority of tho laity but not of the clergy, and the election was therefore referred to tho bishops, with tho result stated. "Tuo election of the Dean of St. Patrick's to Hi? Bishopric of Ossory (says tho
"Guardian") confers upon the Irish Episcopate, distinction of which any bench of bishops might reasonably ho proud. Aliko as scholar, litterateur, and practical man of affairs, Dr. Bonnrd is well graced. At a time when bustling activity and a close approach to übiquity are tho most outsinndirjj clinrncteriatirs of too many bishrns it will bo good for tho Church in Ireland to acquire -i diocesan who, while boiiiß a man of business, is yet a man of leiiniiiii,', an original thinker, and a graceful and luminous writer who has m.iilo substantial contributions alike to theological and to secular literature."'
