TRIAL IN PRIVATE?
We have been advised that the rival Arnst and Pearce, had met nnd had indulged in a preliminary iluticr over two miles, the honours of which rested witfi l'earce. Of this incident a Sydney writer says:— It was expected that the scullers would not meet on Hid river in anything lite a trial go before tho day of the race, but' during the wrck they tot into holts and had a most interesting tussle over about 2J miles. This row may.or may not provide a iHiide as to the result to the admirers of each man, but at' tho worst it was most interesting. Arnst was averse to meeting his opponent, but l'e;irco evidently felt extremely well on tho day and seemed to be anxious for a go. Ho waited for the champion at , Hydo Bridge and broke away with n lead of a couple of lengths. At Uhr's i'oiul Arnst was almost on him, and J'earco, crowded in on tho shore by his rival, almost ran aground. A temporary ease and they were at it again. In the hardest of tho work the challenger did very well and held his own. It seems that Arnst did head him on one or two occasions, but brilliant recoveries by Pearcc put him in the van again, ami he finished up at Cabarita with a length or two 1 to spare. The challenger might havo Rono on to the iinish, but Ariist had had enough of it at Cabarila, and, turning round, headed back for llortJakc. It' was a splendid row by both men, and it was witnessed by only a very limited number of people—probably only the interested parties, as tho men were not o.vpoctrd to try conclusions at any time before the race. Dol'h "stables" are reticent as to exactly what, happened along the course, bnt'it is understood that the trial has given the I'earce party greater confidence, whilo A rust's people arc not disconcerted, as they reckon he is not wound up yet.
