ACTING-SPEAKER AND ACTINGLkADER. At a brief silting of the Legislative Council, held yesterday, after his Excellency. the Governor had retired, the Hon. W. F. Carncross (Chairman of Committees) presided, in the absence of the Speaker of the Council (the Hon. Sir Charles Cowen). The Hon. .las. M'Gowan acted as .Leader of tho House, in the abience of tho Attorney-General (Sir John Findlay. The Oath of Allegiance to his Majesty King George was administered to the Hon. S. T. George and tho Hon. Sir Henry Stiller, both of whom were absent during the session. THE LATE HON. W. C. SMITH. The Hon. J a,?. M'GOWAN proposed that the Council record its appreciation of tho services rendered by the late Hon'. W. C. Smith (Hawke's Bay) and tender its sympathy to. his widow and famHy. Speaking to ' his motion Mr. M'Gowan spoke highly of the character of the deceased .Councillor and of the standing, he had enjoyed in the country and outlined his lengthy service upon various local bodies and as a member successively of both Houses of the Legislature. The Hon. CAPTAIN "BAILLIE, in seconding the motion, endorsed all that the proposer ha<l said of the deceased Coun- . cillor. Tho motion was carried. The Hon. Mr. M'GOWAN said he intended to move that the House, at its vising, adjourn until Saturday next at ,11 a.m., as'a mark of respect to tho memory of the late Hon.. Mr. Smith. Mr. M'Gowan added that he disliked the idea of bring!ug honourable members back on Friday, not' knowing whether they would then have the Imprest Supplv Bill there from ano.lher place. It would bo better for all parties to adjourn for a sufficient time to enable another place to get. the Imprest Supply Bill through. ADDRESS-IN-REPLY. Tho Hon. J. R. SINCLAIR gave notice of his intention to move the Address-in-Eeply on Tuesday next. Iho Council adjourned at 3.20 p.m.
