PERSONAL ITEMS.

The following received invitations to dinner at Government House yesterday:— Sir James Carroll, the Hon. .1. A. Millnr, the Hon. Geo. FohMs, the ITon. R. M'Kenzie, the Hon. D. Buddo, the Hon. T. Mackenzie, the Hon. A. T. Ngata, Sir Arthur Guinness (Speaker of the House of Representatives),- the Hon. \V. C. l'\ Carncross (Acting-Speaker of the Legislative Council). To-day the Acting-Prime Minister (Sir James Carrol!) and all Cabinet Ministers will be in Wellington. Mr. Massey, Leader of fhe Opposition, and several other member.?' of Parliament., arrived in town yesterday. The Harbour Board last evening accepted tho resignation of its treasurer, Mr. V. L. Cachemaille, and placed on record its appreciation of his work for the board during the ten years he has been in its service. Tho resignation takes effect on December 31. The death took place at an early hour on Monday morning of Dr. William John Darby, at his residence, Ponsonby Road, Auckland. 'Dr., Darby was born in Auckland in 1859, and was thus 5.1 years of age. He was the eldest son of the late. Mr. Patrick Darby. He left Auckland at tho age of 11, for Thurles College, County Tipperary, Ireland, and in 1881 went to Dublin, and walked the Mater Jliserieordiao Hospital for four years, when ho gained his diplomas, and was afterwards appointed surgeon at Kingston Hospital, near Dublin. In IS3G Dr. Darby went to London, and practised in the East End for four years, and he subsequently practised at Manchester and Liverpool. He returned to -Auckland in 1891, and commenced practice there. He became medical officer to the Druids, tho Hibernian Society, and the Foresters. Dr. Darby was married.in 1891 to Hiss Marie Larbry (daughter 'of Dr. Larbry, of Paris), who survives him. He was gaol surgeon in Auckland for a number of years, but retired from that position about 18 months ago. Of late years Dr. Darby had remained in private practice.

Our Feiiding correspondent states that word was received by cable from England yesterday morning of the death of Mr. James It. Fry, one of the original settlers of the Feiiding district. It is over 30 years ago since Mr. Fry enmo from England to'-.set tic' the Manchester Block. He was a member of the Wnnganni Education Board for some years, retiring about twelve vears ago, and was also chairman nf the'Makino School Committee. He had made two previous voyages to the Old Country.

Dr. Havson, who has been on a six months' visit to England and the Continent', returned to Wellington by the Moana last evening.

The passengers from Sydney by the Moana last night included Messrs. B. Pharazyn. Guy Johnston, S. H. Myers, and P. D. Leslie.

Mr. William Milvorton, an old Palrnerston resident, has (says our local correspondent) announced his candidature for the Palmerston seat at the coming Parliamentary election. Mr. Milvorton stood at the last election, but only polled about 100 votes. .

Tho trustees of Moore College, Sydney, a well-known Anglican institution, have appointed the Hev. David John Davics, M.4., Cambridge, as principal in succession to (he late Canon Jones. Mr. Davies is at present lecturing for the history tripos in Emmanuel College, Cambridge, lie took a first-class in tho hist, tripos, part I, in 1003, having previously held an exhibition at/Trinity College, Cambridge. He lias been extremely successful and popular as a teacher, and will add much to the academical strength in Svdncv. He lias read deeply in theoloey. His wife is a niece of Sir Lewis Dibdm, the Dean of Arches.

The Hev. James Maxwell, Presbyterian minister, of Chrislehurch, and late of Waddington, died yesterday. He was 09 years of age, and leaves a widow, one son, and five daughters.-Press Association.

Mr Svdnev Dorco has arrived in ttollington'lo make arrangements lor tho opening of the Sousa Band season in this city next month.
